More Frontierland Pix

Let's continue our look at six (of many) scans from Disneyland's Frontierland, all related to the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to some degree. These are, of course, from our friend the Mysterious Benefactor!

First up is this very nice look at the Big Thunder attraction as seen from the river; I don't remember ever seeing the ride from this angle, but then again, I'm usually on the Mark Twain looking toward the dock that we are heading toward, and this view would require looking eastward.

Details! We love details. How about a "kerosene" lantern, for that genuine Old West feel?

The next four pictures focus on some of the Cast Members who worked Big Thunder. Thanks to his "30th  Year" name tag, we know that this one was taken in 1985.

Presumably this is still Paul, he might be checking to see if that little boy is tall enough to experience The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness. Maybe.

Here's Suzanne, she's probably encouraging people to keep their hands, arms, feet, and lets inside the vehicle at all times, and to please pull down on the safety bar.

I'd swear that this is Anthony Michael Hall (from "The Breakfast Club"), but I guess it's just his identical twin. In the next Mysterious Benefactor installment, you'll see other Cast Members blowing bubbles, I guess the photographer thought it would be a fun detail. I hope it was Hubba Bubba bubble gum. Normally I would assume that something as uncouth as bubble-blowing would be considered "un-Disney".

MANY THANKS to the Mysterious Benefactor!

Major-
We love seeing CM's in the wild-! (And as they say... I hope 'Anthony Michael Hall' brought enough gum for everyone-!)

Thanks to the M B & The Major.

Oooh, I really like the first picture! Can I keep it?! I'll clean up after it, take it for walks, feed it, and love it! (I'm saving it to my Disney stuff folder.)

Paul looks like he's blowing a bubble from blue bubblegum. But it's just the bottom edge of the shirt sleeve being worn by the person behind him. (I figured that out all by myself!)

Hmm, in the last pic, I don't suppose this bubblegum bubble can be attributed to the shirt sleeve of someone else. You say, Anthony Michael Hall, I say, Elton John. (We're probably both wrong.) ;-)

Thanks, Major. And you too, MB.

I knew all of these people of course as that was "my time", and when I saw the bubble gum, I thought: "oh, well that makes sense." I'm not sure that guy liked Tour Guides very much, and yes: he has the John Hughes vibe...back then too. Paul was just a guy "doing his job"...no attitudes...and one of the guys who preferred "suns out guns out" rolling up of the sleeves...I saw him on canoes a lot. Suzanne if I remember was a bit of a wild child...fun and perky...you can see the twinkle. I remember being in the Frontierland Break Room: which was a tiny room next to the Golden Horseshoe principal players dressing rooms: I walked into a very "GDB After Dark" conversation...and we were all roaring with laughter...today, I think we would have been fired for having that conversation. I think I have a picture of her at the beach on a OTL (Over the Line) Disneyland team event....Paul was in that group too: so I think I have his photo in that same group...will have to look....not the John Hughes guy however..if I remember correctly, beach culture back then all depended on "City or County" beaches because one you could drink on and the other, you couldn't....so that determined where your activities would be...did you know that even back then they had hand crank blenders? Yep...they did...hard to do ice...but a crushed ice Margarita does the job too. These brought back some great memories of that time..thanks Major, and MB (and Sue).

Oh dear, bubble gum, rolled-up sleeves, and unbuttoned vests. What is Disneyland coming to?

Love that first photo, before that traffic corridor got gunked up with ODV carts and snack booths! At least the French-fry wagon was mercifully removed. That stand that is there now is some of the most awful “themed” design in the Park.

Thanks MB and Major! (And Bu too).

Nanook, I think Anthony must have brought enough gum, you’ll see plenty of photos of other Big Thunder CMs blowing bubbles in future posts!

JB, I’m sorry, but I’ve already promised that first jpeg to the King of Siam. We talk all the time, that guy is a hoot! And you know how royalty are, they like their gifts. Paul might be cool and everything, but he never did learn how to blow a bubble, which is why he was rejected at NASA. I admit that I did not think of Elton John when viewing the last pic! The clothing is much too subdued.

Bu, it’s kind of cool that you actually recognize these people! Why would the “John Hughes guy” not like Tour Guides? Did plaid make him angry? I get the same way when I see paisley. I like to have my “guns out” on sunny days but my skin looks like undercooked pasta, so pale and translucent. It’s no fair that you didn’t tell us what the naughty conversation was about, now I’m probably thinking of things way worse than it actually was. Suzanne doesn’t look like a “wild child”, but I guess you never know. You are so right about “drinking beaches” and non-drinking beaches, I went to Matador Beach a year or so ago, and a ranger was going around asking people to open their coolers so that he could fine them for having alcohol. I would have told him to eff off, but that’s because I am a rebel and a loaner.

JG, this was when Paul Pressler hired both Sharks AND Jets to work at the park. It seemed like a good idea at the time. I’m kind of surprised that the French Fry wagon wasn’t more popular - even I like Mc D’s fries, and little kids like them too. Maybe the management just decided that it was a “bad look”?
