Birthday Time

It's Sunday, but it's not a Snoozle Sunday! It's our good friend Sue B's birthday, and I couldn't post a bunch of crummy pictures for the occasion. Luckily, she sent me some wonderful scans of herself at Disneyland (taken by her dad, Lou Perry), from an October, 1967 visit. Perfect timing!

There she is, in the Flower Market, with heaps of flowers behind her. I like her orange ensemble!

Next is this cute portrait of Sue in front of "It's a Small World", which was relatively new at the time (having opened on May 28th, 1966 - about 17 months before these pix were snapped). I wonder if this was Sue's first time seeing that attraction?

Next, Sue is captivated by the mechanical clock that is part of IASW's facade - something that I can relate to! Not only did I love watching this little free show, but I was always a little worried that I might miss it - in other words, I was happy to wait in line. Good job, Imagineers!

Alrighty, in addition to the photos that Sue sent, I'm going to post a few nice ones from my collection. These just happen to be dated "October, 1967"; it would have been amazing if Sue showed up in these pix, but no such luck. Still, they are good ones.

I love this view of  Tomorrowland as seen from Tomorrowland Station. it was a World On the Move, with the Skyway, Peoplemover, Autopia, and Monorail. Seeing that the Peoplemover train is without passengers, I have to wonder if this picture was actually taken before that attraction opened? If so, that would be pre-July 2nd.

Next is this quite nice look at the loading dock for the Jungle Cruise; I like the composition and color (though that might be somebody's finger in the lower left corner). The jungle itself looks magnificent, and as always, I love seeing the old boats with their striped awnings.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SUE!

Happy Birthday Sue-! A big Thank You for all you do here on GDB; and here's to another fabulous year-! (Orange just may be your color).

"Seeing that the Peoplemover train is without passengers..."

Same for the Autopia, too.

Thanks, Major.

Happiest of Birthdays, Sue! Hunh, seems like you just had a birthday like, what... a year ago? ;-) These photos were taken by your dad in '67. So yer like... 37 now? Many thanks for sharing your dad's photos with us.

Sue 1: You say Sue is in this photo? All I see is orange and red flowers.

Sue 2: Ah, there she is, without her flowery, Flower Market camouflage. I like your Mona Lisa smile.

Sue 3: This is a nice photo. We get Sue, plus the dancing figures of the Clock.

Major 1: This photo has everything! I like how the top of the Matterhorn almost disappears in the misty mountain's majesty.... OK, smog. But it still looks neat. We also get to see one of the Screechys and the multi-trunked Senegal Palm.

Major 2: Major, that blurry 'finger' is a blood spatter. Our photographer narrowly escaped being eaten by a croc and a hippo! Instead, it was the passenger in front of him that got 'slurped'. A red and white striped JC boat, the best kind!

Thanks, Major, for a Snoozleless Sunday. It's nice to get those every once in a while.

Happy birthday, Litigate!

I’m sorry - I didn’t mean to be so formal. I’ll just use your nickname, Sue.

Hope it’s a great one!

Happy Birthday Sue! Many happy returns of the day! Thank you for bringing Lou’s pictures to light!

Major, you’re right. I think the IASW Clock might be the first “pre-show” feature to hold your attention in the queue. Sue is certainly fascinated by it.

The view of Tomorrowland from the train station never disappoints. The layering of complexity is fascinating even today when so many of the old attractions are gone.

Did we ever consider that the purpose of the Jungle Cruise might have been so the animals could look at tourists?

Thank you, Lou, Sue, and Major!

You haven't changed a bit Sue! Happy Birthday. As for me, I spent many a hot summer afternoon at the rear load position on the JC which looked just like that! KS

Happy Birthday, Sue! Thank you for all you have brought to this blog! Cute pictures! We should all be that age again.

Tomorrowland has always been my favorite but I say that about all the Lands. I like the silhouette of the Skyway bucket in the dark of the Matterhorn (why layer when you can go through!)

Thanks Major

Zach

Nanook, I thought that the Autopia cars closest to us were the “parked” vehicles that weren’t in use, but it’s hard to tell.

JB, Sue is so lucky to have lots of photos of herself as a child at Disneyland! I literally have NONE, in spite of the fact that my family went fairly regularly at a certain point during my childhood. My mom was the shutterbug of the family, but not when we were “inside the berm”. For some reason. You aren’t kidding, that smog is intense in the Peoplemover photo, though it does give it a kind of dreamlike misty appearance. And you are probably right about the blood spatter, I forgot about all the gore that used to happen at Disneyland! Now all the mommies have made the gore go away. NO FUN.

Budblade, I know Sue loves to make people happy with her Dad’s photos!

Mike Cozart, gosh, if I knew how to bake, I’d make Sue a giant Matterhorn Macaroon! Two feet tall. With little edible bobsleds! And a marzipan yeti. And a working Skyway that goes through it. WHO’S WITH ME?

Chuck, now I can reveal that my real name is “Tort”.

Steve DeGaetano, DITTO!

JG, there are rides in which the ride itself becomes the entertainment for the people waiting in line - many roller coasters are like that. But to create a unique feature that is just there for the folks outside - that’s still an unusual idea, at least as far as I can think. I do love the view from Tomorrowland station, especially in “smog-o-vision”. Your comment about the animals looking at tourists reminds me of a meme with a cat thinking, “What if my human is the owner and I am the pet??”.

KS, HEY! SO nice to hear from you!

DW, nice to hear from you too! It’s been a while.

Zach, I always feel a little guilty saying that Tomorrowland (or at least the previous versions of Tomorrowland) are my favorite, that doesn’t mean that I don’t like the others!

I love the SuePixs! Or are they LouPixs? Maybe they are LouSuePixs? I know they are not BuPix!

I also like those other two offerings for today. Could the PeopleMover have been closed so they could add the "safety" rails around the vehicles. How soon did it close for that? Mike would know! But yeah, why is the Tomorrowland Autopia closed, too?

Thank you Lou, Sue and Major! And a very happy birthday to you, Sue!

JB said...

Soooo, I guess Chuck's real name is "Toss"?

MIKE COZART said...

The PeopleMover was closed for (most) of 1968 to add the first version safety bars and the body panels redone with fiberglass as the ABS bodies that were colored in the molding process all warped and went wonky during its first year in the California sun. PeopleMover 1968 included a newer type push platen under each car that didn’t slip as much and signage changes.

Happy birthday, Sue!

MIKE COZART said...

The PeopleMover colors were slightly different in 1967 than later colors although it’s hard to often tell because of aged film color etc . The first car colors on the ABS plastic body panels used a polycarbonate paint developed for aircraft . After 1968 when they fixed the PeopleMover with traditional fiberglass the cars were coated with a marine paint developed for watercraft.

Thank you, Major, Nanook, JB, Budblade, Mike, Chuck, Steve DeG., JG, KS, DW, Zach, TM! and Dean! You've made my day!

JB, I look like a sour puss in that 2nd pic, but I'm guessing my dad snapped that pic before I had a chance to smile. Actually, the more I look at that pic, I see my mom's "YOU-ARE-IN-TROUBLE-LATER STARE." All my mom had to do was give me that dead-pan stare for two seconds and then I KNEW to instantly stop whatever I was doing wrong, or I'd be sorry later. It worked like a charm. :o)

Mike, I really do wish I was in DL now, eating at the Blue Bayou with you and all my GDB friends, and going on the rides and attractions together. A perfect birthday, for sure!

Chuck, "Litigate" - ha! I see that JB offered-UP a great response!

KS, the other day I was thinking about how I originally discovered GDB: I was googling the internet for funny stories about the DL JC, and then stumbled on one of the Major's funny comments about a JC picture posted on this blog. BUT, I recently realized that YOU may be the reason [or one of the reasons] that I started googling the internet for the JC funny stories, as I had just read a book that had funny JC stories written by past JC Skippers -- and YOU WERE ONE OF THEM! I loved your sinking skiff story. It still makes me laugh. So THANK YOU for sharing your stories. (EVERYONE on this blog has so much fun-info and stories to offer!)

Thanks, everyone! XOXO

JB, it sure beats “Regurgitate.”

Chuck, we could add “Cookies” to the end of your ‘new’ name…to make it sweeter

LTL said...

Happy Birthday, Sue!!

And Major those are two nice photos, the kind where the viewer can choose to focus on any feature initially!

JB said...

“Regurgitate”. Or we could just simplify it and call you "Up Chuck"!

^ JB, LOL! I had just taken a sip of my coffee drink—when I read that on my phone. Now I need to clean my phone screen - ha!

Thank you, LTL!

I’m late to this party but the sentiments are real: HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUE!!! I should have remembered as May 17 is basically Norways version of July 4th. I should have made a cake out of lefse and cloudberries! Perhaps I will this week. For those who haven’t had cloudberries, they only grow above the artic circle, can only be picked in the wild, and they are a very very very special thing to Scandinavians. Only to be served on high days and holy days…like Sue’s Birthday! The photos are perfect, and so is your hair and ensemble..you must have had a great stylist! The late 60’s into the 70’s were a primo time for Disneyland, I’m glad I was there too: forever enchanted :). Thanks Major for the swell pics: the stripy boats should never have been changed. It’s the juxtaposition of the formalized vessel amongst the wildness around it that makes it special. Now: it’s just a big moosh of camo, and PC jokes. Sorry Jungle people…life was better off script. Thanks Major and thanks to Lou and Sue for these marvelous photos on a very special day !

Thank you, Bu! I looked on the Internet and see that I can order some cloudberry jam…which is what I’m going to do today. I’m
‘curious’ to try it.

Side note to Chuck: Remember, YOU started it. :o)
