Hey, I get that today's photos are not that exciting. But you have to take the good with the... well, not "bad", exactly - maybe "dull" is an apt word. But let's not linger on the negative! Like Pollyanna, we can play the Glad Game, in which we should "find something to be glad about in every situation, no matter how dire".
I'm glad that these two Norman Rockwell-esque kids have found Mickey and Minnie Mouse, two celebrities that haven't "gone Hollywood". They love their fans! I think that everyone is in front of the Emporium, although that bulbified ceiling to the left kind of throws me. Luckily, I'm glad that I have a smart and classy readership who will know just where this is.
I'm glad that the girl thinks she's getting a little too old for such silliness, and yet... she can't resist giving in. Her brother has no qualms, he's having a great time! And finally, I'm glad that we can all look forward to better photos tomorrow.

A LOT of color-coordination in today’s images. I love pictures of these characters [and of Mickey and Minnie, too]. :op
ReplyDeleteThese are great, thanks, Major.
Major-
ReplyDelete"...I think that everyone is in front of the Emporium, although that bulbified ceiling to the left kind of throws me".
Major, it's obvious you were taking advantage of the recent sale prices on Bacardi 151 Rum, otherwise you'd have recognized that bulbified ceiling as that of the Mad Hatter shop marquee in Town Square.
(And why do those kids look familiar-?)
Thanks, Major.
Thanks for that location info, Nanook. So that must be a hat of some sorts — to our right of the young man — in the window display. It sort-of looks like a toilet seat, though.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad these aren't photos of a "dead skunk lying in the middle of the road, stinking to high heaven". A low bar, for sure. But hey...
ReplyDeleteThe boy on the right looks like Charlie Bucket (after he got the golden ticket). Really nice expressive expressions on these kids. I'm wondering if the Meeces eyes look dark because of the camera settings or if they really are like that. If so, why? It looks strange. And why is Mickey lifting up Minnie's dress? The cad!
As Sue noted, the kids are color co-ordinated with the Mice. The girl is wearing gold(ish) and red, just like Minnie. And the boy is wearing red, black, and white(ish), just like Mickey.
The kids' expressions elevate these photos from "dull" to fun. Thanks, Major.
Speaking of hats that look like toilet seats....remember THIS ONE?. (Look at how MUCH it sold for!!)
ReplyDelete"And why is Mickey lifting up Minnie's dress? The cad!"
ReplyDeleteJB, Mickey ISN'T lifting up her dress. SHE'S lifting up her dress! The tramp!
@ Sue-
ReplyDeleteI believe that window (along with others) is part of the shop next door - at that time the Gulf Oil Hospitality Center.
^ Thank you, Nanook!
ReplyDeleteBut now it’s even more-baffling as to what that object is. Maybe Mike has it in his collection and can tell us….
It's Yellow Dress Minnie! I don't know if I ever saw her in the park. I think I have only seen her in photos. I'm guessing they didn't have her wearing that dress for very long?
ReplyDeleteThose two kids look like the ones who were sneaked backstage at the Golden Horseshoe, by their mom, or older sister. Or next door neighbor. Or a complete stranger. We saw them here on GDB, a few months back.
Here's the spot those pics were taken. You if you zoom in on the canopy in front of the Mad Hatter Shop, you can see the little light bulbs on it's underside:
Mad Hatter Shop Today
Well, if I have to pick a favorite today (and I DO always have to have a favorite, just ask my kids! [it's ok, I only have one]) Anyway, where was I before the double parenthetical intrusion (great band name!)
ReplyDeleteOh, yes! The first one is the fav! The girls look like they just formed a corporation and have decided to put the guys in marketing. Marketing! Can you imagine? The jokes write themselves! (Which is good because I got nothin')
Have a great one!
That “ toilet seat” looking thing appears to be a straw hat with blue ribbons that has fallen off its perch of the hat stand tree. That multiple hat stand shop display was a very rare antique …. During Disneyland’s 25th in 1980 there was a series of detail and artifact background stories in cast publications … liked the fire insurance markers in New Orleans square … the baby stroller from Gone With The Wind used in the Disneyland Easter parade ..stories like that … And one was about the origin of that elaborate hat stand.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally the GULF HOSPITALITY CENTER ( THE HOSPITALITY HOUSE) was at Walt Disney World only … Gulf sponsored the Walt Disney Story at both parks … at Disneyland there was the GULF FITH FREEDOM MURAL at the exit of Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. I recently obtained a 1973 Gulf fold out brochure all about the Disneyland Gulf - 5th Freedom mural …apparently given out to guests as they exited.
Whoa, I expected no more than 3 or 4 comments, MAX. It just goes to show you.
ReplyDeleteLou and Sue, everywhere I go, I insist on color-coordination! “When I meet you at the disco, we all have to wear shades of purple”. If somebody doesn’t follow the rules? I pity the fool!
Nanook, I do typically drink two full bottles of Bacardi a day, but I can’t use that as an excuse… I did not know that the bulbified ceiling was the Mad Hatter shop. I honestly can’t think of any other photos in my collection that show it, or at least that show it lit up. Those kids have been seen here at least twice before, maybe three times, including a strange backstage photo where they are in a “costume room”.
Lou and Sue, I guess you have forgotten the 1976 fad of wearing a toilet seat on your head. The Fonz did it, and then everyone else did too.
JB, how many people remember the “Dead Skunk” song? Not Andrew, I would bet big money. I see the Charlie Bucket resemblance, he would never steal an Everlasting Gobstopper. I think those dark eyes on Mickey are due to the fact that it was late in the day (after sunset?), and the mesh that the CM looked through didn’t reflect very much light in the evening. Which made me realize that as a rule, costumed characters vanish once it gets dark. I never thought about it!
Lou and Sue, I am now a little embarrassed to admit that I am the person who bought that hat.
Lou and Sue, maybe the two mice were trying to “shoo” a bee? Yeah that’s it.
Nanook, when I think of old-fashioned hospitality, I think of Gulf Oil! Remember that Disney magazine (they are all over eBay) that was sponsored by Gulf? I don’t own a single issue, so I can’t say if they are fun or not.
Lou and Sue, it sort of looks like one of those neck pillows that you might wear on an airplane.
TokyoMagic!, now that you mention it, I guess I have seen a few pictures of Yellow Dress Minnie. I think there were some Lou and Sue pix of Minnie in that outfit? Yes, those are the kids who snuck backstage and also robbed the place where all the cash was stored. They didn’t even use a gun, they just got really aggressive. Thanks for the “today” photo of The Mad Hatter shop!
Stu29573, “Double Parenthetical Intrusion” was Christopher Nolan’s third movie, it was like “Freaky Friday”, only with time-travel and a talking dog. If I formed a corporation, I would immediately start scheming on how to offer less product for more money. It’s never been done before! Is marketing a shameful position in a company? Hey, my sister does marketing!
Mike Cozart, ah, we have seen hats like that before, i had one a few months back with some girls sitting with some of the Three Little Pigs. I tried to find it, but couldn’t - but I think they were basically the same hats. Meanwhile, I think it’s so interesting that there have been several (at least) cast member publications, “Backstage Disneyland”, “Disneylander”, “Disneyland Line”, and probably others that I am forgetting. Wow, today the baby stroller from Gone With the Wind would probably be worth a chunk of money! It sounds like there was definitely a Gulf Oil presence at Disneyland, I wonder if I have that Lincoln brochure? It doesn’t sound familiar.
The boy looks so familiar, along with the very high quality photograph, I wonder if it is Peter Ostrum. He has older siblings. But looks a tad too young to be here in 'Hollywood' yet. He was 12 when making Charlie, in Munich. At 13 he turned down an acting contract, so could have been in LA to say no thank to producer David L Wolper.
ReplyDeleteOr another young actor? Familiar somehow.
MS
These are cute pictures. I was going to guess the location was near the Opera House, based solely on the fact that this is where those characters mostly are found.
ReplyDeleteI also guessed that thing in the window was part of the renowned Main Street Toilet Seat Collection. Another oddity of the Park, like Lafitte’s Anchor, the Petrified Tree, and the giant palm tree in Tomorrowland. I’m glad to be proved wrong.
Thanks Major!
JG
MS, I do see a resemblance to “Charlie”, but the odds of this being Peter Ostrum are pretty slim! I wonder why he didn’t want to continue acting? Maybe working on that movie was a real trial.
ReplyDeleteJG, good point, the Mice do tend to hang around the Opera House area, or nearby, sort of where the old Hills Bros. Coffee Garden used to be. I hope someday Disney fans will look for “hidden toilet seats”. Some fun!
Yeah those Disneyland detail articles were incredibly interesting . I mention bits of historical info all the time. Only way I knew that if all the historic fire insurance markers in New Orleans Square , all were reproductions EXCEPT for one! I wonder what happens to the “Gone with the wind “baby stroller ?? It was purchased at auction from a movie studio by the owners of the famous CLIFF HOUSE restaurant… as decor . When the Cliff House went bankrupt, Disney prop scouts purchased it. It has been used in Disney movies , Disney parades : including the annual Easter Day Parade , and Disneyland’s performances of America on Parade. Is it stuffed away in a warehouse now or was it sold off at a property control sale - after its history was forgotten??
ReplyDeleteMajor : what’s interesting about that Gulf Disneyland brochure is that it barely mentions the Lincoln & Walt Disney Story and focuses almost entirely on the FITH FREEDOM MURAL …. It’s goes over the historical figures and their quotes… the last one is Walt Disney . All the “modern day” Americans at the end of the mural were WED imagineers …herb Ryman , Collin Campbell, Marc Davis , Harriet Burns , Ron Dominguez…. And others … ( although this is not revealed in the souvenir brochure). The Gulf Hospitality House in Florida acted as an extension of WDW guest relations … it was in the center entry and would have been the lobby to the MAIN STREET HOUSE HOTEL had that hotel been completed . Guests could get information on WDW and the vacation kingdom , make reservations for The Diamond Horseshoe Revue and Liberty Tree Tavern Restaurant and King Stephens Banquet Hall… as well as the Spirit of Aloha diner show , and the Top of the World show. The Victorian seating area acted as a lobby to Walt Disney story and the town square cafe .
And one more thing : the famous CLIFF HOUSE of San Francisco was the inspiration for the CLIFF HOUSE Restaurant that was to be at Disneyland’s DISCOVERY BAY! ( the elaborate Victorian building atop the rockwork next to the water wheel pistons on the discovery bay model)
