Two From June 1969

Here's a pair from June, 1969 - one "different" view (but not that amazing), and one "OK" view. Let's start with the "different" photo, with two little girls quenching their thirst at two classic Disneyland water fountains (one is tall, one is short). The bags of C&H Sugar have been stolen by teenagers, I'm sorry to say. The girl with the blue jacket is all ready to do a spit-take when somebody tells a joke. It looks like we are right near the Haunted Mansion, though I as unsure if it is back there at the upper portion of the frame or not.

Next is this shot of Mr. Toad's palatial manor in Storybook Land. Toady really lived it up! Is the architectural style "Georgian"? Down by the water we can see Ratty's house, complete with a little rowboat. In the foreground is a little girl sporting mouse ears.

Major-
Yes, the Haunted Mansion is behind those gals. Inquiring minds want to know why Miss. green sweater chose to walk behind the drinking fountain for her refill. Is she incapable of using her right hand to operate the bubbler, or was instructed by the FBI to 'never face away from crowds...'

Thanks, Major.

The older girl looks very regal in her royal blue cape with ermine collar. OK, it's not a cape... and the collar isn't ermine. But it still looks regal! "Ladies and gentlemen, the back side of water fountains!" I wonder why the girls are behind the fountains instead of in front? Maybe they're left-handed. Or maybe the previous slurpers stood back there, so they did too, thinking that's how its done. [Edit: I see Nanook already addressed this pressing issue.]

Mr. Toad really likes his fireplaces! Looks like there is a chimney in every room. It's pretty neat how they kept the small scale by using small shrubs, trees, etc.. It all looks so realistic. I can see Landshark's dorsal fin cutting through Mr. Toads front lawn. Nice view of Toad Hall. A rare White Rhino must've been sitting next to the Mouse-eared girl.

Thanks for the pics, Major.

Happy Labor Day!

I saw the first photo and thought “my, aren’t those little girls cute!” And then I realized that this was taken in 1969 and those “little girls” are several years older than me and probably grandmothers by now.

I would say Toad Hall is in the Tudor architectural style rather than Georgian. Georgian architecture tends to be very symmetrical; I once heard a docent at the Georgian Drayton Hall outside Charleston, SC, describe the style as “big, bold, and balanced.” I would say that, except it’s a Federal holiday and I’m off today.

In the first pic......isn't that the rockwork and tunnel to the "Indian Village," just above the head of "Spit Take Girl"?

Awwwww! Storybook Land before they ruined it!

Thanks for the trip back to 1969, Major!

Hi Folks! I apologize (once again) for my absence; over the past few days, my family has been celebrating my mom's 90th birthday. It's been fun, and has also been A LOT. After I return some loved ones to the airport today, I will have more time to "get back to normal", which will be nice. Thanks for your patience, and I will hopefully talk to all of you later this afternoon!

Happy 90th Birthday, Mrs. Pepperidge! (Or would that be "Majorette" Pepperidge?)

Mr Whiteshirt is belly-bucking the trash can cart for no apparent reason. Casey Jr couldn't this morning and is nowhere to be seen. I see bare dirt so, bad show, Walt, bad show.

Happy Birthday Mrs P! Wow!

Do you suppose the girls grew up to form a heavy metal band (Spit Take!) that involved water?

Thanks, Major

Happy Birthday Mom P!

I miss those old drinking fountains, but the progress of building codes did them in. The trash cans with the “X” motif are seen in the NOS-Haunted Mansion area, but I don’t recall this specific location. Those girls are smart not to turn their backs to the crowd. Keeping a eye on Mom and Dad, I’m sure.

I don’t mean to contradict you or Chuck, Major, but Toad Hall looks to me a bit more Jacobean than Georgian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobean_architecture). A somewhat older style, more forgiving of additions and remodeling, while Georgian tends more to symmetrical design, and Tudor usually sports half-timbering and plaster. To be fair, these all tend to blur together, sharing stylistic and decorative motifs in brick, stone, and plaster.

Mr. Toad’s ancestors were awarded their titles, estates, and lands by the King for their service to the Crown in the First Crusade (ca. 1096-99), they built an enormous Norman-style castle and keep, which was remodeled often over the years, following the styles of the moment, into the glorious hodge-podge we see here.

Thanks Major! A lot to see in these two pics!

Happy birthday, Mrs. Pepperidge!

JG, who do you think you are, a professional architect who taught Architecture History or something? :-)

Even the kids are well dressed in 1969, that's some seriously snazzy sweater boy.
Happy big birthday Mrs. Pepperige. Your son is generous and funny, congratulations.

^ MS, you should probably say which son....so she knows which one you're talking about. ;o)

JB, ha! Mr. Albino Rhino.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Pepperidge! Without you, we wouldn't all be here. Lou welcomes you to the Nonagenarian Club!

Thanks, Major. Glad you're back, again.

Major is gone again? Oh well, like Gloria Gaynor said, "I WILL survive!" :-D

And happy 90th to your mom!

Nanook, Einstein discovered that water from a drinking fountain tastes better from that other side, and that little girl knew it!

JB, I guess it never occurred to me that the girl with the blue cape (sweater?) looked “regal”, but hey, why not? I think that the girls like being able to stand on the curb and gain a 4” advantage that they would not have from the front. Toads generally avoid fireplaces, but not Thaddeus J. Toad, he’s unlike any other amphibian. Thank you for pointing out the rare white rhino!

Chuck, yeah, that weird time trick (experienced when viewing old slides) is quite a thing - especially when the photo is clear and colorful and almost feels like it could have been taken last week. My guess about Georgian architecture was half-a**ed at best, somehow Tudor sounds more spot-on!

TokyoMagic!, hmmm, that does look like a tunnel - now I’m really confused. Could that photo be from that far along the western side of the park?

TokyoMagic!, thanks, I am very lucky to still have my mom, and that she is still in good health and still pretty sharp.

zach, you don’t know it, but Mr. Belly saved the lives of dozens of guests by preventing some runaway trashcans. He should be praised!

JG, why would those old drinking fountains not meet newer building codes? They look safe and sturdy. Those “X” trashcans exist in different colors, there is probably info letting us know which color can be found in which land. It can’t be random! Funny, if I think of Toad Hall in my mind, I imagine half-timbers, but there’s none to be seen on the structure! “Jacobean”, I like it even though I’ve been ignorant of the style. I like pinto beans, black beans, and jaco beans. Mr. Toad’s ancestors can be seen on the Bayeux Tapestry! One has an arrow going into his eye.

Chuck, thank you for the birthday wishes for my mom!

MS, I appreciate that the kids were made to be “neat and pretty” for their trip to the park! Thanks for the kind words.

Lou and Sue, ha, it’s true, there’s more than one son. But none of the others have a Disneyland blog, and that’s what sets me apart! I’ll pass your b-day wishes on to my mom when I see her again on Wednesday.

JB, I do feel bad that I’ve missed so much blog stuff, but this is why I have months of blog posts ready to go - so that I can take some breaks!

Late to the party, but I believe the architectural style of Toad Hall is Elizabethan – the chimneys are the giveaway.

Georgian, Tudor, Jacobean, Elizabethan....
Yer ALL wrong.
It's Seussian!

Sorry Chuck, couldn’t help myself.

Major, the ADA rules dictate that wheelchair accessible drinking fountains have to have a knee space under the fountain bowl, so these pedestal types no longer comply. I had forgotten that Toads were on the Bayeux Tapestry, but you are right!

Pete, I can support that, it’s a matter of a few years one way or another, but those chimneys are distinctive.

Thanks to the Jr. Gorillas for the lesson in English building styles.

JG, well I guess those ADA rules make sense! I know sometimes people get mad about ADA stuff, but I try to put myself in the position of somebody who might not be able to get a sip of water, it must be extremely frustrating.

Pegleg Pete, uh oh! Elizabethan! The controversy continues!

JG, I forgot that Queen Elizabeth was chimney crazy.

JB, I like it.

Dean Finder, thank you!
