Today's photos might be fun for some, boring for others. But I kind of like them, in spite of the fact that they are not super exciting! A mother and daughter pose in front of the Mickey floral portrait and Main Street Station (population: 53,000,000). The mass of pink flowers is quite pretty! Sadly there's no train at the station, but the Kalamazoo Handcar is always there.
What did I say about there being no train?? Moments later, a locomotive (the E.P. Ripley?) pulled in hauling the classic yellow cars. This one is the "Painted Desert", not only a Disneyland feature, but a real place that a Santa Fe train could take you. In style.
Hmm. Well, okay. The station looks nice... what we can see of it. And yes, the pink flowers look pretty. Mom's white dress looks vibrant, and the daughter's dress is interesting; sort of a patchwork design. I'M TRYING REALLY HARD TO SEE THE GLASS HALF FULL HERE! ;-) Oh, and the sky is bright blue.
ReplyDeleteOn the left we can see the poster for Iceland; known for their tiki carvings. And on the right there is a poster for the Disney Automat, where you can get soup and sandwiches out of little cubbyholes.
Really, not a bad little picture.
This next one is a 'part picture'. We can see part of the train, part of the station, part of the posters, part of the trees, part of the shrubs, part of the fence... need I go on? It IS a nice view of the train; clear, with bright colors.
For me, these photos were sort of fun, sort of boring. But also, sort of OK. Thanks, Major.

ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if 'Sis' is wearing a "Mom-Made" dress-? Those weep hoes are definitely doing their thing, but also causing staining on the asphalt.
As the cumulative attendance numbers seem to indeed indicate 53,000,000, that would place the images some time in early 1966 according to my sources... a 1980 Disneyland document celebrating the 25th anniversary of Disneyland. (I always say who knows, but).
Thanks, Major.
(Make that weep holes-!
ReplyDeleteThese images are very colorful. Even the green striped wall stains and pink stains, on the pavement area, add extra color. Very pretty….thank you, Major.
ReplyDeleteKinda the exact opposite from yesterdays batch...big pop of color, wonderful wonderful color.
ReplyDeleteNice to get this view to themselves...Gretchen, you and mom go stand in that drain ditch in front of the flowers - eww, ok. Make it quick dad.

Painted Desert is car 105. Had the photographer waited, or moved to his right, he might have been able to capture one of the Grand Canyon vignettes that adorned car 106, the Grand Canyon. I've never seen a really good photo of the murals.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that the train cars were named for destinations, much less that they were adorned with murals, so there’s that.
ReplyDeleteThe retaining wall and fence look pretty bad here; cracks, stains, rust streaks, not to mention the nasty weep holes, since Nanook already did. Someone get the go-away green paint can!
Imagine being able to stand all by yourself in front of Floral Mickey? Instead of standing in line for a half hour dodging semi-truck sized strollers.
There is some good in every Park photo, Major. Thank you.
JG
There's just something nostalgic about the Santa Fe logo.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Major

JB, I warned you! The prophecy has been fulfilled! I know what you mean though, perhaps these should have been Snoozles. They are so crisp and colorful though, and I didn’t want to go to jail for misrepresentation. I’m too pretty for jail! The Disney Automat - I wish I’d been around the the heyday of automats, especially Horn and Hardaart in New York, supposedly the food was great. I’m never sorry to have a photo of any of the trains, so photo #2 is a winner in my book
ReplyDeleteNanook, looking at it closely, I’ll bet you’re right, that dress was probably sewn by mom. A McCall’s pattern? I don’t know what to tell you re: your source… these are date-stamped “July 1963”. You can have date stamps from way after a photo was taken, but not 2.5 years before!
Nanook, I like the first version better.
Lou and Sue, maybe those stains will someday be as beloved as the Castle Stain!
MS, ha ha, at least the drain ditch was dry. No slimy creatures or mosquitoes!
Steve DeGaetano, I think Daveland has a pretty good shot of the Grand Canyon vignette - I wish I did too, since I love that they went to the effort of putting something beautiful on the side of that particular car.
JG, yeah, it took me a while to notice that each of the yellow train cars had the name of a different national park or other destination. I love it. The “romance of the rails” is evoked. It is kind of surprising that they did not make that retaining wall more attractive, considering that it was about to show up in thousands (millions!) of photos.
zach, I agree!

ReplyDeleteI'm always skeptical of these "so-called factual" sources. I'll take those Kodak date stamps any day over a mysterious 'reliable source'.
