In The Plaza, April 1973

Here are two nice photos from The Plaza, enhanced by a beautiful Spring sky, blue with puffy white clouds. We'll start with this shot looking toward the castle, the Disneyland Band is in their red livery, and playing "Outa-Space" by Billy Preston. John Hench requested it! The trees and benches to our right are where the "Partners" statue now stands.

Just past the INA Carefree Corner on Main Street, our photographer looked to his/her right, to snap this picture of... well, I'm not sure what was so interesting. The Motorized Firetruck has chugged by, probably honking its olde-timey horn. We can just see Rolly Crump's swirling purple and yellow flower beds at the entrance to Tomorrowland, along with the yellow and white-roofed souvenir stand that used to be behind the Monsanto House of the Future.

  1. Major-
Nice shots of the Plaza/Hub. Perhaps the photographer spied that yellow Bobsled and wanted to preserve it in pictures-!

    Thanks, Major.

  2. The Disneyland Band, standing in a circle, looks like the Whos, down in Whoville, singing ♫"Fah Who Doraze"♫. Except there's no Who Tree in the center. I looked for Cindy Lou Who in the crowd, but I couldn't find her. She's probably atop Mt. Crumpit playing with Max, the Grinch's dog.
Nice photo. Do clouds have scale? They look good here, adding perspective to the picture.

Hey! There's a yellow and white Bobsled careening around the Matterhorn [Edit: Dang you, Nanook. ;-)]. We can see a bit of the PeopleMover track near the center and to the right; mostly just the pylons. Also on the right, there is a guy kneeling down. Is he tying his shoes? Tending to a small child in a stroller? Throwing up?
There's a lot going on in this photo, even if we're not focusing on anything in particular.

    Pleasant pics, Major. Thanks.

  3. It's hard to believe that there was ever a time when they allowed guests to stand up on the back bumper/running board/whatever of the Firetruck. And it looks like neither one of those men are even holding on. The guy at the right looks like he's taking a picture! Maybe he was impressed by the sight of the Bobsled way up there on the Matterhorn, and said "Safety be damned!"

    Thanks, Major.

  4. For pictures taken “nowhere in particular”, these are pretty good.

Photo 1, no less than five trash cans in view. The Plaza is the calving grounds of Main Street trash cans. They are born here and swim upstream to the Train Station and Esplanade. There’s an odd little sign in the planter center left, is it advertising something about Plaza Gardens? We can see the nice entry arch sign for that establishment. And to the extreme right, there is a Secret Service operative wearing an earphone headpiece speaking to the Undercover security guard in a gray suit. Are they pre-screening the route for Kruschev?

Photo 2 is obviously focused on the streetlight. But I’m happy to see the flower swirls and the souvenir stand too. Those guys on the back of the Fire Truck are living it up now. That has to be fun. Only three trash cans here, but I’ll take a bit of PeopleMover track in return.

Thank you for these pics Major, sometimes it’s good to focus nowhere in particular.

  5. Love the image of Alpine Gardens with the Matterhorn backdrop. Used to be one of my favorite places in Disneyland until it was changed into King Triton's Gardens. Thanks, Major.

Yes...something is going on. The firetruck is filled with suit wearing agents. And no guests would be allowed to ride on the back step. My first thought was the nicely dressed fellow on the left is a Security guy. KS

  8. Nanook, aha, I didn’t even notice the yellow Bobsled!!

JB, I like thinking that the Disneyland Band is playing “Fah Who Doraze” (is THAT what they are saying??) from Der Grinch. Their bellies are full of roast beast. Walt Disney told us that “Clouds have no scale *cough*”. And we shall never forget it. The kneeling guy is proposing to The Invisible Woman, but he doesn’t know that she’s buying popcorn nearby.

TokyoMagic!, good point! Your comment reminded me that we’ve seen people on the outside of the Keelboats, and even outside the railing on the Rafts once or twice. I guess that was before all cast members were armed with tasers.

JG, I love the beautiful life cycle of trashcans, especially as they morph in their cocoons, and then emerge as fully-fledged receptacles. I see the sign you are talking about, but have no idea why it was there - I don’t recall seeing anything like it in other pictures. Good eye on the Plaza Gardens arch/sign, which I didn’t even notice. Whenever I see two (or more) men walking around in suits, I always wonder if they worked for Disney in some capacity. It does seem like it would be fun to stand on the back of the Firetruck, the people sitting were probably mad that they hadn’t thought of it. “Here I am, sitting like a chump!”. Get used to it!

    K. Martinez, I admit that even though the second photo is not focused on one big thing, it is a very nice picture!

KS, huh, you’re right, all of the people in the Firetruck appear to be suit-wearing men! What the heck??

While I enjoy the extra, open terraces of the Matterhorn Bobsleds, that firetruck is also suspiciously Crowed...with what to my overactive imagination supposes could be a lot of Japanese business men; perhaps some of the many who were making a shopping list for a resort in Tokyo, and who then worked in Disneyland to learn ALL about replicating it. Or not.

  10. Major, "“Fah Who Doraze” (is THAT what they are saying??)" Apparently so. I had to consult SeƱor Google to get it right.

  11. The signs on the “carnation plaza gardens” arch marquee say “welcome” ….. the sign in the flower planter is the “carnation plaza gardens CONCERT TODAY “ sign . It also features a changeable time slot for performance times.

  12. MS, ha, “a group of businessmen” is as good a guess as any; whether they are Japanese or not is harder to tell!

    JB, Google never lies.

    Mike Cozart, thank you!

In the first image, two men in suits are seen on the far right, with one wearing an earpiece, suggesting perhaps security or media. It looks to me like this was some sort of media event or official visit.
