Disneyland fans know that there are a number of delightful secrets that are fun to look for, and even more fun to share with your friends. I'm going to reveal some of those secrets to you today!
Many people are aware of Walt Disney's apartment, located above the Firehouse in Town Square. Walt could spend the night there, sometimes with Lilly or the grandchildren. He made grilled cheese sammiches on his sandwich press! Maybe some of you have been lucky enough to tour the apartment; one of the most touching features is this lamp, which is kept lit as a tribute to Walt Disney, who would often light a lamp in his apartment window to signal his presence at the park (also so he could see what he was doing, presumably). Mr. Disney's beautiful lava lamp is never extinguished, just like dreams, wishes, magic, and imagination.
Here's a rare photo of the apartment, which was left just as it was when Walt passed.
Some secrets not as secret as others. For instance, many people know about the alternating red and white lightbulbs at the Coke Corner. As luck would have it, when they got to this spot, they found that there would have to be two white bulbs in a row, or two red bulbs in a row. "Say, Walt, if we just started from the corner and worked our way out, this wouldn't be a problem.", John Hench suggested. "No! Put a strawberry Zinger up there instead!". "A what, now?". "A strawberry Zinger!!" "But Walt..." "JUST DO IT!". To this day, a fresh strawberry Zinger is placed in the light socket every morning as a tribute to, I don't know, all the little children of the world or something.
Here's yet another Main Street secret. If you happen to turn right onto East Center Street, and head back to the lockers, you'll encounter a crazy wall. This is the famous "test wall"; its purpose is not known for sure, but as you can see, on the left side there are uneven bricks, while on the right you'll see something that is a bit more "urban" and realistic. Walt personally tagged that side, and you must admit that his skill was undeniable. They ultimately chose even, well-ordered bricks, but it is intriguing to think, "What if...?".
Now we've left Main Street, and I can share a secret that used to be found inside the Indiana Jones Adventure, one of the most amazing and elaborate attractions in Disneyland. Early on, Harrison Ford did not want his likeness used on the Indy animatronics, so they opted for frequent Disney star Joe Flynn's likeness instead. Clear photos of these animatronics are rare, so I'm thrilled to be able to show you this one.
Popcorn and Disneyland go together like chocolate and peanut butter, and the charming popcorn wagons seen throughout the park have little "Toasty Roasty Men" turning a crank, like some sort of Sisyphean punishment. Back by the Haunted Mansion, one of the Toasty Roasty Men (customized depending on where they are in the park) happens to bear the likeness of wrestler and Oscar™ winner (needs verification) Tor Johnson. It is known that Walt Disney was a huge admirer of Tor, and even let him ride the Carolwood Pacific on occasion.
And finally, a Haunted Mansion secret! These are the most popular with the fandom. For about the first three months, you might have been lucky enough to see a detail in the ballroom scene, specifically at the long table where a ghostly birthday party was in progress. Look closely! A platter with the disembodied head of beloved actor Paul Lynde could be seen. The head was soon removed - some say because it was too terrifying.
Well, there you go... a selection of incredible and true DISNEYLAND SECRETS! Be sure to amaze your friends with these the next time you get together.
Wow. Now that we are all in on the secrets, does that mean we all have to be killed by the ghost host?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely brilliant, Major! You have outdone yourself!
ReplyDeleteI believe that is the LAVA Lamp® that Walt used to heat up his chili beans, before flicking them out the window at passersby.
And speaking of Walt, I know there is a lot of speculation about exactly where they store him, but it looks to me like they just left him on the bed and just covered him up with his favorite blanky.
I love the Zinger in the light socket. Actually, I love all of the photos. Once again, a brilliant job, Major!
Major-
ReplyDeleteThat's clearly not Walt's apartment, as Walt wouldn't be caught dead sleeping on a bed missing a [very] girly, dust ruffle-!
I'm beginning to wonder if anyone would recognize Joe Flynn without his trademark horn-rimmed glasses.
Good 'ol Tor Johnson - friend to both Walt Disney and Ed Wood, Jr. He truly was an 'everyman'.
What would April Fools Day be without Paul Lynde, I ask you-? Undoubtedly, this short-lived addition to the Haunted Mansion ballroom was the inspiration for the 1976 Paul Lynde Halloween Special - described by one reviewer as ...the most "fabulous train wreck of a holiday spectacular ever filmed," "a vision of horror" and a "phantasmagoric, polyester-clad, rhinestone-studded time capsule of bad jokes and disco medleys with a nonsensical storyline".
Thanks, Major.
Nanook, funny.....at first, just looking at the thumbnail, I thought that was Drew Carey hanging from the rope. After all, the Imagineers did include Mr. Carey in their all-time "E" Ticket masterpiece, "Superstar Limo."
ReplyDeleteHaha! OoOOoh! I think I see a Hidden Mickey in the lava lamp gloop... or maybe it's Elliot the Dragon... hard to tell; it keeps changing shape.
ReplyDeleteWow, Walt's apartment is even more sumptuous than I thought! Love the blanket covering the window, and the mattress directly on the floor.
Hmm, the strawberry Zinger still makes it look like two red bulbs in a row. What they shoulda done is use a Little Debbie Swiss Roll. The brown wax coating wouldn't match either the red bulbs or the white bulbs. Problem solved!
Yes... Yes, I can definitely make out Walt's distinctive handwriting on the wall. Of course, it has been replicated in countless "Walt" fonts that one can download for free.
The black-rimmed glasses really give the Indy AA a dashing look! Much better than the Tim Conway AA they used for a very short time.
Actually, I would like to see a Tor Johnson themed Toasty Roasty Man in front of the Haunted Mansion. He should also be one of the singing stone busts.
I missed out on seeing Paul Lynde's disembodied head, so it's great that you had a 35mm slide that you could scan for us! [s-s-shudder!] Wasn't there a Bewitched episode where Paul Lynde appeared as a head-on-a-platter?
Soooo glad you put this 'special post' together, Major. It's been years since we've had one of those. Your accompanying commentary was spot on. I'm hoping we see some of these little-known facts and photos on the various Disney fan sites!
It's wonderful to see Walt's apartment - where Walt re-charged each night and gained inspiration for his new projects.
ReplyDelete[Major, I sure hope you don't really know the person who owns this bedroom!] :op
In the Haunted Mansion, I see that they removed Paul's head because it was too scary -- BUT left the hidden Mickey head. Now that's scary!
LOL! Thank you, Major.
Hahaha
ReplyDeleteMS
Come to think of it, I do recall Bu saying something about Walt's apartment had a distinct smell [that was still lingering from Walt's time there]. NOW, I see why!
ReplyDeleteOne word: "Bravo!"
ReplyDeleteThis is why GDB is the best Disney blog ever. This, right here.
ReplyDeleteThanks Major!
JG
Well done, says I.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Major
@ JB-
ReplyDelete"Wasn't there a Bewitched episode where Paul Lynde appeared as a head-on-a-platter?" Hey - he's not called The Major for nuttin', you know-! (Season 2, Episode 5).
Budblade, I wasn’t aware of that “small print” in the deal!
ReplyDeleteTokyoMagic!, I don’t know what you are talking about, these are genuine photos of DISNEYLAND SECRETS. I wonder if Lillian ever joined Walt when flicking chili beans out that window? “It’s just like when we were courting, Walt”. I think the person in the blanket might be Frank Wells, he used to like to spend the night there sometimes. I’m not sure how safe a Zinger in a light socket is, but so far there have been no issues.
Nanook, you forget that Lillian added a feminine touch to the apartment. Joe Flynn only appeared without his glasses in that famous “Playgirl” photo spread. Walt used to love it when Tor would sing “Feed the Birds”. “Sing it for me, Tor”. “Tor happy to, Walt”. After a mention of Paul Lynde’s Halloween Special in the comments (years ago), I tried to watch it, but it was too painful.
TokyoMagic!, are you seriously comparing Drew Carey to the great Joe Flynn??? They are not even in the same universe!
JB, I know that Walt’s decision to use a strawberry Zinger seems unorthodox, but far be it from me to question his genius. I’m just glad that the tradition continues to this day. I wish they’d somehow work in a “Dorf” AA figure at Disneyland, since I never stopped laughing after watching “Dorf on Mount Olympus”. Wow, Tor as a singing bust, brilliant! I have no idea if Paul Lynde appeared as a head on a platter elsewhere, if so he must have been upset at being typecast. “4 years at Juliard for THIS?”.
Lou and Sue, what can I tell you, that’s Walt’s bedroom! I like the idea of a severed Mickey head inside the Mansion, if they sort of hid it, and made it appropriately ghostly.
MS, …!
Lou and Sue, part of the fun of visiting Walt’s Apartment is trying to ID the various aromas. “Is that… unwashed socks?”.
Bu, I am merely a reporter of the truth.
JG, Aw shucks!
zach, you get extra points for talking like a pirate.
Nanook, what a crazy coincidence!
I've seen that terrible Paul Lynnde Haloween special. It's... not great. I hope the HM disembodied head made the same jokes, or at least some of his jokes from Hollywood Squares.
ReplyDelete"Walt used to love it when Tor would sing “Feed the Birds”"
ReplyDelete♫ Eeeat the birrrds,
Feathers and alll.
Feathers! Feathers!
Feathers and allll! ♪♫
Well, here I thought I knew everything. I've been so humbled I don't know what to say! KS
ReplyDeleteA GDB post for the history books! The "more realistic" urban test wall will forever live in my brain.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Major, your "launching Moonliner" pic is still working it's way around social media! You must be a proud papa!
