Rejects - Unrejected!

I have continued digging through old boxes of previously-scanned slides, looking for examples that I had skipped for one reason or another; there weren't hundreds, but a few dozen were worth sharing here.

Many of you will recognize the "First Family" in today's images... the lady and little boy are literally from my very first post so long ago. Many of their Disneyland slides had turned extremely red, and I did my best to restore them, with limited success. I am pretty sure that all of these are from 1958.

So there they are, Mom and her 2 bambinos, up on the poop deck (heh heh) of the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship. We all get extra points because the sails are unfurled (points can be redeemed at your nearest Toys 'R Us store). Which one of you pesky kids broke that pane of glass on the lantern? Ken Martinez, you're looking very shifty! Also, spit out that gum unless you have enough to share with everyone on the blog.

Mom is explaining what a pirate ship is to her extremely skeptical son. "Mom, I'm five years old, I wasn't born yesterday". Why can't pirates be nice? The daughter is scanning the horizon like mariners of long ago.

I think you'll agree that this photo is very arty, rivaling the work of Margaret Bourke-White.

  1. Major-

That third shot is most-unusual. I'll bet some young whippersnapper pried-out that missing pane of glass to take home as a souvenir. The nerve of some people-!

    Thanks, Major for the color-correction.

  2. It wasn't me who broke that pane of glass on the lantern. It was Jay Nartubez! Ask Chuck! He'll tell you it was him!

I'm sure glad you unrejected these images and restored them. They look fine. Not only that but the third image is pretty wonderful. Thanks, Major.

  3. I wonder what's in that wooden box? Saltines perhaps, for Polly, the peg-leg pirate's pet parrot?

The kid is just trying to figure out how to get the ship out of the lagoon and into open water. THEN the real fun begins! Fun fact: He was the inspiration for Pirates of the Caribbean! Of course he had to settle on a 1964 Chris Craft that his mom could tow behind the Rambler. Moms- pirates' best friends!

  5. Speaking of "poop deck" it looks like jr is making his contribution from the faces he's making. Either that or the tuna sammich is not sitting well. Sister's blouse matches the sail, she could be crew. Mom is lovely as always. Nice shots. Thanks

  6. Methinks that the missing lantern pane was used to fashion those fabulous earrings that the lovely lady is sporting.
    Great pics Major.

  7. The angles and composition on these photos are so cool! If any pictures deserved unrejection, it's these.

I had assumed that the not-particularly-smiley expression on Stripey Girl's face was because she was uncomfortable on the back of that mule in the other picture. Maybe she just wasn't feeling well that day. Or maybe she's Linda's cousin. Either way, the way she matches the pirate ship's sails puts a big grin on *my* face

  8. Nanook, the third shot is unusual… I’m not sure it is good, but it’s unusual. The pane of glass might have been a souvenir for somebody, but once it got home, it was just a boring pane of glass. Darn hoodlums.

    K. Martinez, you’re always blaming poor J. Nartubez! It’s kind of fun to revisit the “First Family”, they’ve been with me on this ride for a long time.

TokyoMagic!, I wondered about that box too - it’s in an odd place, perched on the edge of that railing. I thought it might be a sort of binnacle to hold a compass, but that’s probably incorrect.

Stu29573, I hope that kid knows where the beaches are in Anaheim, because I don’t! Also, things could be a lot worse than settling for a Chris Craft of any kind. And a Rambler wagon, I’ll take one any day.

Alonzo, oh man, you had to go there! I often want to say things like that, but then I think, “No, Major, this is a family blog, it isn’t right”. And then I watch 5 episodes of “Davey and Goliath”. But anything goes for the commenters! Hey, I didn’t even notice that the sister’s shirt matched the sails.

DrGoat, my mom used to have a lantern (I didn't break it, I swear) with tiny panes of what was actually thin seashell of some kind - it was surprisingly transparent. Maybe that’s what this ship’s lantern was made of?

  9. Melissa, I think that the girl just wasn't a big emoter. Speaking of Linda, it's going to be a while, but... STAY TUNED!

  10. Arty stuff today. Kinda like french cinema, nobody ever grins in french films. These folks are searching for existential truth by standing on the deck of a pirate ship and contemplating mortality. Or it's just a cold morning, you decide. And now I'm gonna make myself a tuna melt, and find my inner child. Merci, Major.

  11. Major, I swear it was Jay! I saw him with my own eyebulbs! Ken and I were nowhere near the place. Honest!

(Looks like we'll have to lay low for a while, Ken. That was a close one. The used lantern pane market is slowing down anyway.)

At first I was trying to figure out what the First Lady was doing with a cell phone in that first image, but I see in the second that it's a ticket book. She even has a pen in her hand to check off the attractions they've already seen.

Thanks for the restorations, Major - they were well worth the effort.

  12. @ Chuck-
Not only is Mom grabbing a ticket book, it appears she's also clutching a box of popcorn. (She does know how to party-!)

  13. Jonathan, from now on I am going to require all GDB readers to wear top hats and monocles. This joint needs to be classed up!

Chuck, well OK, I have no choice but to believe you and Ken. Nice detail on the pen in mom’s hand, for checking off the attractions they’ve seen! It seems unnecessary - unless she wanted to make a record of it when she got home. Maybe she kept a diary.

Nanook, yep, she has the classic 50’s popcorn box!
