Snapshots, 1974

Here are a few more snapshots from a batch circa 1974!

Let's start out with the most boring of them (and it is REALLY boring). Seriously, why would anyone take this picture! Maybe they were a fan of manicured shrubs.  Way more interesting than that colorful little train!

Next, we get a look at the castle courtyard in Fantasyland, with the Tinker Bell Toy Shop in the background. Check out the groovy girl with the sailor hat and the flares (complete with Cuban heels)! SO 1970's.

This last one is interesting; Dumbo's Flying Elephants is closed for refurbishment, and all of the pachyderms are resting on sawhorses. You can see that the Dumbo with the yellow hat is still lacking some painted face details - I've never seen that in a photo before.

  1. Major-

In that first image it's all about the topiary. And OMG-! those shoes and the bell bottoms. It MUST be the 70's. And as far as those Dumbos' are concerned, 1974 was the year for that massive pachyderm 'makeover'. (I hear tell many celebrities in Hollywood were quite jealous-!)

    Thanks, Major.

  2. I'm surprised there isn't a construction wall around Dumbo. It seems like nowadays they put up a construction wall or a tarp around anything that is being worked on.

Where is groovy sailor girl today?

  3. Boring - and yet, interesting because of their boringness.

Where is Groovy Sailor Girl today? In the Home telling her great-grandchildren war stories of the Dippy Hippy Takeover of Tom Sawyer Island.

  4. I love the first image precisely because it's something that isn't the usual and overly focused on. In fact I love pics of railings, shrubs and various queues and holding areas at Disneyland.

In the third image Dumbo's eyes look cloudy. Looks lit like he's taken some really good drugs and has gone beyond the pink elephant stage. Thanks, Major.

  5. I wonder if the first shot was an accident. I remember the days of getting photo prints back from the drugstore only to realize how many times my finger had accidentally press the camera button.

  6. I'm voting for accidental photo on that first one, though for an accident it's relatively stable and at least frames items of some interest, such as the stern of the pirate ship and the awesome Casey Jr ticket booth.

I cannot help but hear "Stayin' Alive" in my mind while looking at those Cuban heels. Groovy Girl's pose screams "It's so hard to walk normal in these things!".

  7. @ Tom-

But it's easier to walk in those heels than on those super-tall stiletto "skyscrapers"-!

  8. Nanook, I always thought “topiaries” were more elaborate than mere manicured hedges. But what do I know! I suppose even Dumbo needs an occasional refresh; maybe it would be better to have a spare elephant, so they could pull one off and temporarily replace him… repeat as needed.

TokyoMagic!, yeah, they made no attempt to hide the work being done. Kind of crazy. Groovy sailor girl is now known worldwide as… Judge Judy!

Scott Lane, I really only meant that the first one was boring, but I guess you thought they were ALL boring!

    K. Martinez, don’t forget telephone poles. Ha ha, Dumbo has gone beyond the “pink elephants” stage. He’s eight miles high!

Melissa, it very well could be. And in the days of film, I’ll bet a bad word or two was uttered. Come to think of it, I utter bad words even when taking digital snaps. It’s so fun!

Tom, I had to look it up, but “Saturday Night Fever” wouldn’t come along for another three years. Confession: I’ve still never seen that movie.

Nanook, I don’t know how women endure those ultra-high heels for hours on end.

  9. @Major - I knew Saturday Night Fever came after... but the groove is dug deeper than time, man.
