Tram & Streetcar, July 1958

Today I'm finally getting back to a series of slides circa 1958; I'm not sure why it took me so long to get to a "part 2".  I blame hobgoblins. I figured I would post these more or less in the order in which they were taken, so in a way it will be a kind of virtual trip report.

Last time, we got one nice view of a parking lot tram... this one is less about the tram and more about the people on board. As usual, I get a kick from observing the crowds (not "crows") … their mannerisms, their clothes. Lucky them, getting to experience a pre-Matterhorn Disneyland!

The first photo that was taken inside the park was this shot of the Horse Drawn Streetcar. There's room for us! I'm ashamed to admit that I've never taken a ride on the Streetcar… I'm always in too much of a hurry to get to the big stuff. I really should make an effort; you never know when something like this could unexpectedly go away.

  1. Major-

You definitely should take a ride on the horse drawn streetcars. Had you been "motoring" on the one pictured, you could hop-off for a cup of delicious Hills Bros Coffee.

Now - as for those "crows" you mention in the first picture, some of the 'lady ones' are sporting lovely 1950's big print skirts; others - pedal pushers. Ahhh - what a time it was.

    Thanks, Major.

  2. Dave, are you referring to the "Crows" whom we met in a previous post? Or did something just whoosh by me...

And as for Main Street vehicles: take 'em all from time to time! They be so cool.

When I was a kid, I never thought I'd miss a parking lot or get nostalgic looking at high-tension power lines.

  4. I've ridden all the Main Street vehicles and still enjoy going on them now and then. Sometimes I get bored of going on the big stuff and like to ride the less celebrated attractions. It keeps Disneyland fresh. Of course being from out of town, I visit multiple days and have the time to go on just about everything. Thanks, Major.

  6. I've been looking forward to the continuation of this series, and these certainly didn't disappoint!

I love what looks to be a "grand opening" banner for the Hills Bros. Coffee House, which opened June 13, 1958, just a few weeks prior.

We usually rode the Main Street vehicles on the way out, when we were too tired to walk. I remember the street car, omnibus and a putt-putt car (not sure which).

Except then we would walk back to go through the shops, so there's that...

I don't think I've ever really visited Main Street as a "land" in itself the way we would "do Tomorrowland" for instance, systematically studying and going on everything... time to try it.

  8. Nanook, I know I should ride ALL of the Main Street vehicles… but I go to the park so seldom and there is so much to do. They always fall to the bottom of the list. As for the "crows"… another damn typo!! It was SUPPOSED to say "crowds". I didn't mean to disparage the people in the photo!! I'm going to go fix it now.

Patrick, see my comment to Nanook regarding the "crows"! Man do I feel dumb. Why don't I proofread more carefully?

Chuck, I know exactly what you mean.

    K. Martinez, if I went to the park for a multiple-day visit, I would probably ride them; on the other hand, I still haven't been to DCA since Carsland went in, so that could easily take another day. I need THREE days!

Melissa, I would never call them hobgoblins!

Brad, I noticed the banner, but didn't think anything of it. Cool that it is for the grand opening of the Hills Bros. Coffee House! Good eye.

JG, I think they stop running the vehicles after dark? Or am I mistaken? The last few visits, Main Street is SO crowded post-fireworks that they wouldn't be able to run the vehicles anyway.

Oh I didn't realize the new paint job on the overflow pathway is now the same as the coffee house the color scheme of the late 50s!

  10. JG/Major - The Main Street Vehicles stop running after 2 p.m.

  11. Anon, is the overflow path actually open now?

    K. Martinez, wow, they stop much earlier than I imagined!
