Leftuggies, 1996-style

We're getting down to the last of the photos from 1996, which explains why today's selection is kind of random.

Next to the Carnation Ice Cream Parlor, you would find this charming outdoor dining area, accented with red and white umbrellas. There's something so festive about red and white, isn't there? It must be early, there's not a soul to be seen. Notice the dalmatians in the window display under the Carnation sign. Probably advertising some new dog-flavored ice cream. What else could it be?

Here's an unusual angle showing the Plaza Inn. I wish I could be sitting under one of those umbrellas right now, relaxing and taking in the scenery. I love the striped flower beds that lead to the entrance to Tomorrowland.

And finally, a photo that could could have been snapped yesterday, with the Mark Twain heading into the wilderness. The landscape looks so lush and green and inviting!

1996 was the year the live action film "101 Dalmatians" was released, and there were puppies all over Main Street.

  2. D-ticket is correct. The promotion was called "Dalmatian Celebration".

I miss the striped flowerbeds that graced the "Tomorrowland
'67" entrance. What were they thinking with the Astro Orbitor and rockwork?

The Mark Twain looks dwarfed next to the foliage, but I do love the wilderness look along the Rivers of America.

  3. D-ticket, ugh, that live action version of 101 Dalmatians... the animated version is so great, why mess with success?

    K. Martinez, they managed to maintain those striped flower beds for many years (decades?)... maybe somebody decided that stripes were out of fashion. And I agree that the Twain looks dwarfed, but I don't mind it... nature should be more grand than a steam boat!

Remember Walt's line regarding trees -

From Walt Disney - An American Original by Bob Thomas:

A staff member once questioned why Walt wanted big trees,
since the buildings were scaled down to less than real size.
"Trees have no scale", Walt replied flatly.

  5. @Graffer - Yes, I remember the "Trees have no scale" quote, but that's only true to a point.

Some of the trees have become huge and changed the scale of buildings/structures at Disneyland and how views unfold around the park.

I love the natural beauty of trees and the shade they provide , but I still think Disneyland would benefit from some strategic trimming around certain areas of the park.

  6. Everything is better with stripes. Umbrellas, flowerbeds, socks, cats, pajamas, drinking straws, Jungle Cruise boat awnings, etc.

The entire year of 1996 was kind of a Leftuggie in the photo album of my life, but who could forget those awesome commemorative ice cream flavors and the advertising jingles that went with them?

We’ve got two new flavors, new flavors to savor!

Carnation Dalmatian; it’s sweeping the nation
It tastes like Dalmatians, with bright red carnations mixed in!
Tulip Alsatian’s a poor imitation, a foul aberration, an abomination. a sin!
So have some Carnation Dalmatian sensation – come in!

    Dalmatian Carnation, temptation, elation!
It tastes like carnations, with chunks of Dalmatian mixed in!
We avoid speculation on the red pigmentation, or gritty sensation, or manifestations of skin,
Dalmatian Carnation will make your vacation – come in!

  7. Graffer, I thought he said that trees have no SCALES. Which is a weird thing to say, even if it's true!

    K. Martinez, it is true on Main Street that when the trees get too big, you can no longer see so many of the signs and details, which would be a shame.

Melissa, I like striped gum too (Fruit Stripe Gum). By 1996, my Flock of Seagulls haircut was finally starting to embarrass me (so I switched to corn rows). I am impressed with your song lyrics; I can see myself starting to write something like that, and then changing my mind, because I'm lazy.
