More Disneyland Wardrobe Department!

It's time for yet another batch of vintage Disneyland Wardrobe Department photos (courtesy, as always, of Huck)!

You just don't see enough people wearing jumpsuits anymore. But in 1960's and '70's Tomorrowland, they were just the thing. Here's Sandy in her canary-yellow and ultramarine-blue "Peoplemover" ensemble (circa 1970). The Peoplemover was not a fast ride, but Sandy's costume was designed to reduce friction at supersonic speeds! White go-go boots are the perfect accessory.

This guy is not happy. Not. Happy. Maybe because his outfit (dated June 1969) includes a jacket for the Summer? I remember looking through old LIFE magazines at a used book store, and one article - possibly from 1969 -  had "Fashions of the Future" (or something)... some of them looked very much like this (only the artwork typically showed the person wearing wrap-around mirrored shades).

There's my favorite girl again, looking adorable in her groovy Tomorrowland Jets costume (circa April 1966). Her hairdo mimics the vapor vortices created as a space plane touches down on terra firma!

THANKS, Huck!

  1. I'm loving the Brady Bunch style zipper with the large pull ring on that first costume. Maybe that guy in the second pic isn't happy because he's having to wear leggings? It's 2012, shouldn't we all be wearing jumpsuits everyday by now?

  2. lol, Tokyo! I was thinking about those stirrup pants we wore back in the 60s and then they came back in the 80s/90s, wondering if hey will make another comeback due to the popularity of leggings (a bad fashion choice if you ask me; sorry, but they should only make those in small! otherwise, not a pretty sight :--(

The yellow outfits look like Barbie and Ken to me (that guy even looks like Ken), the blue one is the one I like.

Nice pics today, Major. Going to a class reunion today, classes of the 70s (mine is 74), might see some cool fashions tonight!

  3. You date yourself at 45+ if you admit to having owned and worn a shirt, blouse or jacket with one of those big ring zippers. Guilty as charged.

Swoopie is cute as a pin (as usual).

#2 does not look the part of the happy, friendly cast memeber. Those poly pants may be a bit snug around the manhood.

    White go go boots, groovy!

    Huck comes through again, Thanks.

  4. #1 Yeah, I've worn shirts with the ring zipper and I'm well above 45. I’d completely forgotten about those.

#2 I like the style of his costume, but I'd be unhappy too, if I had to wear it in public. His shoes don't work with the outfit IMO.

#3 This is the best of the three. Beautiful and simple. I like your description of her hairdo Major.

I'd take any of these costumes to what they have today. The generic Tomorrowland costumes they currently have are hideous in every aspect.

    Thanks Huck & Major!

  5. TokyoMagic!, that giant pull ring makes me think of a parachute's "rip cord". Foof!

Nancy, I guess there would be no doubt who was the cast member in the crowd. Have fun at your class reunion!

Alonzo, it's funny, Huck always refers to girl #3 as "Swoopie"!

    K. Martinez, if I ever had a ring zipper like that, I don't remember. But it was a long time ago! And you're right, back in those days the costumes had style.

I had a shirt with a ring zipper, all the cool kids did too.

I also can't help thinking about Diana Rigg when ring zippers are mentioned.

I also think of Diana Rigg when our favorite girl shows up, she has the same spritely look.

Of course, I also think of Diana Rigg every day, no matter what I'm doing.

  7. JG, Diana Rigg... I loved the black leather jumpsuit that she wore! I always thought that the black and white episodes were the best.

  8. Yay! I love thw WD posts. Yeah, there's something about the combination of the cut and material of Ken's pants, the front leg seam (which he probably had to check all day for straightness) and the oncongruous shoes that would make me frown, too. On the up side, you wouldn't need your morning coffee to stay awake in a suit that bright!

I remember ring sippers on my childhood winter coats in the 1980's. Then again, a lot of our clothes were hand-me-downs.

  9. Nancy, I forgot that they were called stirrup pants!

I had a few shirts with the circular ring-pulls, but I also had some with a long narrow rectangular pull. This was elementary school that I'm talking about. It's time for those to come back in style!

  10. Nancy, Sandy does remind me a bit of the first Malibu Barbie from 1971:

  11. thepicklebarrel, I agree with you!

Melissa, thanks to Huck we will have several more wardrobe department posts (I'm doling them out a little at a time to make them last).

TokyoMagic!, I just remember velour shirts and stripey pants (though I did have a red jumpsuit when I was a really little kid).

Melissa, Barbie stole all of her ideas from Sandy.

  12. "Swoopie" that’s the perfect name for her. Sorry Major, something just compelled me to find this girl today. She’s just SO darn cute!
