Two From January 1960

This little girl is having a good old time riding her gleaming Carousel horse. Notice that the horses are not all white like they are today (I know I point that out every time, but that's how I roll); I prefer that look, personally. But the powers that be at Disney presume that everybody wants to ride a white horse. Meanwhile, note how shiny and perfect that black horse is. I'm going to call him "Snertles".

This next photo is kind of a "nothing" shot (taken from the Monorail?), looking past the base of the Matterhorn and the queue at the load area for that attraction. Notice the one bobsled just zipping past on the right!

  2. a carousel snap is a given every time we go to the Park, like marking your child's height on the doorway once a year...

i love the look at Tomorrowland, a place i always want to explore. its waiting patiently for me...looks like a nice day, too.

thanks for a smile to start the morning :-)

  3. I always wanted the black horse and I miss them. Palomino's too.

But the Prince always has a white horse, I guess.

Major, I have always liked the view across the lagoon into the wooded area criss-crossed with roads and tracks. It seemed emblematic of our future, new forms of transportation blending with the familiar freeways. That promise seems as distant as ever and is even receding in Tomorrowland.

In the second photo, the monorail track. Correct me if I am wrong. My understanding is that the monorail track when it first opening in 1959 stayed within the park and did not go to the parking lot and out to the hotel. It was like that for a couple of years. Therefore, a fairly short ride.

Is that correct or is this something I am remembering incorrectly ? Can anyone verify this ?

  6. Chiana - :-)

Nancy, I didn't go on the carousel until my last visit (last year!). For some reason we didn't ride it when we were kids, and then I was too cool. The fun things was that there were these two teenage girls that were talking to me and my date the whole time, and they were hilarious.

JG, I agree with you about the view across the lagoon with the Monorail, Peoplemover, Subs, Autopia, (and in the old days, maybe even the Skyway and the Motor Boats). I just loved it!

Matterhorn, I predict that the most popular boy's name next year will be "Snertles".

OC Native, you are correct. The Monorail beamway was extended outside the park to the Disneyland Hotel in 1961.

Nancy - I'm glad to see someone else is thinking about the feelings and self-esteem of the neglected and lonely stationary horses.

Major - I'm not entirely sure the horses were repainted white by the Company. The ride is 56 years old this year. I'm only 42, and my hair is slowly turning white without any help from Corporate in Burbank...

The girl on Snertles looks a bit like your sister. Old family photo?

  11. fotogogo, I wish I had family photos like this! If it IS my sister, I want to ask her what she was doing at Disneyland in 1960!!
