Frontierland '56

Yessirree Bob, I've been posting photos of Frontierland for the past two days, and figured I might as well go for a third. After all, it is the largest land in Disneyland, at nearly 10 billion acres.

I love this shot of the Mark Twain as it moves away from us, with Frontierland looking very unfinished. We are not so amazed at the sight of an ornate Mississippi sternwheeler, but to the average suburbanite over 50 years ago, this must have been a stunner. The riverbanks are mostly bare dirt. To the left is the Plantation House restaurant; fried chicken sounds pretty tasty at the moment!

Rumbling by on the shore is a genuine Conestoga covered wagon. There wasn't much to see back in '56, but something tells me it was a fun, tooth-rattling ride anyway.

That first picture shows the real frontier. Civilization is so new here that the landscaping hasn't grown up yet.

Thanks Major. You're making an otherwise bad day tolerable.

I especially love these early views of the park (and views of surrounding Anaheim) when the landscaping was so sparse...Thanks again, David!

  4. These are awesome photos for a pretty homesick boy right now. Thanks for sharing.

The Mark Twain's a special memory that goes all the way back to my first visit to Disneyland at two-and-a-half. It's what inspired my lifelong love of pipe organs.

Wow, both JG and Chuck are having bad days. It's nice to know that today's photos helped at least a little!
