Arriving, April 1966

Anybody who went to Disneyland when they were a kid remembers the sense of anticipation the night before the trip, and then the mounting excitement as you piled into the car and were actually on your way! If you somehow managed to miss seeing the Matterhorn from the freeway, this might be your first look at the park. Like an oasis to a thirsty nomad! We don't care that it's a bit overcast, do we?

Whoo-EEE! In line to buy our ticket books. Can you believe that it will cost us around $15 to get the three of us in? But that's inflation for you.

All of the kids are excited to see Mickey Mouse, although they are wondering about that giant red bow tie. When did he start wearing that? The Peter Pan collar is interesting too, I predict that they will come back in style - for men's fashions - in a big way. We're going to be seeing a lot more of that freckle-faced lad, so I hope that you like him.

I think I'll post a few more from this group tomorrow.

  1. from the Disneyland marquee, to the ticket price boards and the attraction posters in the background (and not to mention the guests!!) Disneyland was one colorful place!! And to thing all the coloring was done my people--not by a computer program that made the combinations and selctions for you!!

  2. Oh how neat! Thank you Maj for this "you are there" type treat and how good of the original photographer to know some of us would like seeing these shots. :)

  7. Love that sign: It instantly brings good memories flooding in.

The one thing I really don't like about the addition of DCA and Downtown Disney is the complete removal of that wonderful, gradual approach to the park: Spotting the Matterhorn, seeing the sign, going through the tollbooth, parking, seeing the main entrance from afar, looking at attraction posters while tickets are being purchased...

Now you get all the noise and bustle of Downtown Disney right up front and you get no view of DL's entry until you're right there...Approaching from the side. Blech.

I guess today's kids will look fondly back on memories of seeing California Screamin', Parking in the Giant Garage and getting off the trams in Downtown Disney while looking at all the banners advertising what's new at the parks...But, boy, did I love that original sign.

  8. A nice bonus is seeing the Anaheim Covention Center under construction in the background (behind the sign).

  9. Rich T, I can't agree more.

Outsidetheberm, good eye! I didn't notice it from this angle, but will be posting another photo where you can see a bit of Convention Center construction as well.
