Auntie Alice, April 1962

I have dubbed this cheerful lady "Auntie Alice". It just seems to fit! With her ultra cat's eye glasses and colorful hat, she looks like one of Samantha Steven's delightfully dotty aunts. She is striking a pose in front of a couple of attraction posters, and that plastic house we all know and love.

If Auntie Alice was a witch, she was afraid of heights! The next two photos show her staying safely on the ground while we abandon her. Still, she smiles just as sweetly as before.

Seriously, how did that work? "We're heading to Tomorrowland, auntie! See ya later!". I hope they took a round trip and came back for her.

Meanwhile, my eyes wander to the two fabulous bouffant babes with their sweaters and poofy skirts.

  1. Maybe they made auntie walk the whole way?

One of the young ladies in that last pic is wearing high heels. You can still see that on some of the guests at Tokyo Disneyland. That couldn't be too comfortable to spend the day at DL in high heels, could it?

Auntie looks completely solitary in the composition of picture #2, in a sea of grey asphalt, everyone with their backs turned to her. But she does look happy!

  3. Miss Alice looks like a good sport. "You kids go on that ride, I'll keep my feet safely on the ground here and wait for you to come back."

And yes, she does look like she's related to Samantha somehow.

  4. She's gotta be Aunt Clara's sister!

They didn't let you take luggage on the skyway and there was no way Auntie Alice was letting go of her white naugahyde purse.

2nd pic is classic! Nice set of photos, thanks!

  7. Nancy, yes, that is a chimney... it just doesn't show up very well from certain angles.

Would you say that is a bulbous bouffant?

  9. It is certainly bulbous, as well as bodacious!

  10. Checkout those water fountains in the third picture - I can't say I have seen those before

  11. Good Catch Dan, those fountains are new to me too. The look like the first generation fixtures (opening year with small ceramic square bowls and exposed plumbing) that have had cabinets built to modernize them.

  12. Love it. Boy that Matterhorn / Monorail poster sure looks super swell there in the bottom pic. Cheap decor? Maybe but it works for me. :)
