Caterpillar vehicle, January 1962

Here's a great photo of my all-time favorite ride vehicle. The Caterpillar (or "caterpiggle"*) inching his way through the oversized leaves at the end of the ride. Last year I listened to a podcast in which somebody suggested that the Alice in Wonderland attraction was passé, and that it should be replaced with a Beauty and the Beast attraction. OK, bring on Beauty and the Beast, but leave Alice alone! As I've mentioned before, this attraction is unique to Disneyland, and I think that most people dig it.

I want one of those caterpillar vehicles. No, I mean it. I really do. I'd drop in an engine and drive it to work each day in day-glo splendor. Is anyone aware of an auction in which one of these was sold? Don't they ever get replaced?

*Thanks to Pogo Possum for the word "caterpiggle"

  1. Hey that's a great idea! They should be made eco-friendly and we can all drive caterpillars! I'd so buy one!

  2. They could make them so they run on biofuel, you know leaves and other such things.
I do not think any of the vehicles have come out. If I remember correctly, one of these vehicles is very high on Richard Kraft's want list.

  3. Driving caterpillar car around town could be bad for one's marriage.

Alice in Wonderland was always a MUST RIDE every time every summer we went to Disneyland. In fact, one of the only two pictures I have of me at Disneyland as a young girl is on this ride (the other was Dumbo).
I'm sure I don't have to declare it's virtues to anyone here.
See the faces of the adults? They are having fun! I love the new Disneyland commercials on TV where the parents' bodies turn into their former children's bodies as they enter Disneyland portals. Truly a dream come true for us who went to Disneyland as children during the 1950's and 60's. What I wouldn't give for a few hours of being a kid in Disneyland again.
