Here's a pair of Disneyland views, featuring a lady (visiting from the midwest?) as she checked things out.
Assuming that our heroine just arrived, walked up Main Street into the Castle forecourt without much dilly-dallying in between, she arrived pretty late in the day. Those sun is already sinking in the west! But that's how folks sometimes did it back then, allowing only a few hours for their visit. I just scanned some slides from another batch with a woman who went to Disneyland and Knott's in the same day (well, she's wearing the same dress at both places, at any rate). Perhaps folks like her only had one free day to see the amusement parks?

Did you ever think the lady had become quite fond of that dress and as such, acquired a 'copy' for every day of the week-? Ah-ha-! As for the gent winding his camera, that appears to be a Revere Magazine 16mm, Model 26 Movie Camera, w/Rotating Turret. He could capture some dandy images with that beauty.
Thanks, Major.
The two guys to the right of Ms. Midwest have the same hand positions and both looking to the right. One has a box of popcorn, one has a camera. (Is that a spring-driven movie camera? Or a stereo still camera?) Ms. midwest probably didn't know what this "Disneyland" place was all about. She's thinking, "Where are the jars of canned vegetables and fruit? Where are the quilts? Where are the peach pies?"
ReplyDeleteI see that Ms. Midwest has shifted her purse and sweater(?) to her other arm. That purse probably weighs 10 Lbs., easy. The girl on the right looks cute with that spray of white flowers in her hair. The lady behind our heroine looks like she's carrying a "little red hen". Only it's not so little.
Nanook, thanks for the camera info... I knew you would. ;-)
Maybe not the most exciting Disneyland pix, but great for people watching! Thanks, Major.
AMAZING PROOF OF TIME TRAVEL!!!
ReplyDeletePeople from 1939 visit 1950’s Disneyland!!!
That lady's hat has netting in front, covering most of her forehead. I know I've seen other ladies' hats with netting before, but now I'm wondering what it's purpose was. It wasn't going to keep the mosquitoes away. I'm guessing that it was purely for decoration.
ReplyDeleteNice early DL pics, Major! Thanks!
