A Pair From March, 1961

Before we get to the vintage Disneyland pix, let's wish GDB friend Andrew a very Happy Birthday! Sue B. is so good at keeping on top of these things (unlike me), and she sent along a photo from a vintage birthday party. Maybe from the 1980s? 1970s? We'll just have to guess. That white cake looks delicious, my mom used to make a white cake with white frosting and raspberry jam between the cake layers, it was one of my favorites. PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE BOY TO THE LEFT!  This family is very lucky, they have an original Cezanne hanging on their wall, they probably got it at a church jumble sale for $2. Thank you, Sue, for providing this photo, and Andrew, I hope you have a wonderful day.

**********************************
Here's a nice pair of slide scans from March of 1962! Let's begin with this photo of a reduced version of the Disneyland Band, a mere eight guys instead of  the 20 (or so) that you might see marching down Main Street with Vesey Walker in the lead. There aren't many clues as to where the band is standing, but I believe that the queue to the left might be for the Midget Autopia. Or is it Storybook Land? I MUST KNOW!

It's always fun to get a look at the Submarine Voyage when the lagoon was drained for maintenance - you can observe so much that is normally hidden beneath the blue water. From this Skyway view we can see how they had to use some intense colors to cut through the blue, like the corals in yellow and vermillion ("vermillion" = "fancy red").

Zooming in, there are some rocks (just above the rim of the gondola) where you can see that some mechanical critters were normally placed, maybe a sea turtle, or an octopus battling a shark.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDREW!! Wherever you are!!

It’s interesting how by the big 1967 submarine voyage rehab … the lagoons colors became so purple - lavender- pink …. .

Andrew-
Happy Birthday-! I certainly hope you're partaking of [what appears to be] some sort of Jello mold with sliced, pimento-filled olives topping the concoction. It's the perfect appetizer before birthday cake.

Major-
"I believe that the queue to the left might be for the Midget Autopia. Or is it Storybook Land?"
No more callers please... we have a winner-! Make that Storybook Land. The white & blue edged roofline seen at the extreme right, just above the scalloped 'fence line' surrounding Storybook Land, is for the Midget Autopia.

Thanks, Major.

Happy Birthday, Andrew! I hope you can find time in your busy schedule to stop by and see the tasty white cake that Sue found for you!

These kids remind me of the classic "three monkeys" figurine, only different... Smell no evil, taste no evil, eat no evil. Don't know how the toddler fits in... feel no evil? What is that glop in the amber bowl? It sorta looks yummy, and sorta... not. Lollipop pudding? Moldy apricot pudding? Also not sure what they're gonna put the DelMonte(?) ketchup on. And what does that ribbon/banner on the door say??? I tried flipping every which way but it still made no sense. I don't think it's written in English. The Cezanne original: The frame alone is probably worth a cool million! And Major, you KNOW that if you say to pay no attention to the boy on the left... well that's a double-dog-dare challenge! I for one see nothing wrong with Little Lord Nosepicker.

This is a great pic, Sue. Thank you!

Eight band members instead of twenty? The Killer Swans ate well that day! (I wonder what the Swans did with the instruments?) The band members all have cockatoos on their hats. I have no idea where the Band is standing, other than Fantasyland, because of the decorative chainlink fencing.

Ha. This colorful jumble reminds of the Magic Rocks kits that grow crystals before your awestruck eyes. I loved those kits! Only here, it's after you've dumped the Magic Liquid off, exposing the crystals. That one mechanical apparatus under the arch looks like it might be a trilobite! Scientists say they are extinct, but here's proof that they are still here! In your face, scientists!

Thanks for the special peek into the waterless Lagoon, Major.

Happy Birthday to our favorite kid -- Andrew!!! (You're still a kid to the rest of us Jr. Gorillas.).

Mike, you commented: "HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDREW!! Wherever you are!!".
Andrew is out there - conquering the world! Make us proud, Andrew! Just check in, once in a while, and remember to call home.

"These kids remind me of the classic "three monkeys" figurine, only different... Smell no evil, taste no evil, eat no evil. "
JB, I think the first one is: "Pick no evil."

JB, I can't figure out what that silly thing is, on the door to our right, either. I hope someone can figure it out.

I see that we even have cream-cheese-stuffed celery sticks on that table spread. Absolutely nothing kids like -- except for the cake and ketchup. (I hope Andrew is having a better birthday meal, today, than this.)

Thanks, Major, for hosting today's party.

I hope that kid didn't feel compelled to "sample the frosting" on the cake, after inserting his finger into his nose!

Are we seeing just a smidgen of a Monorail train, above that roof that Nanook pointed out as being part of the "Midget Autopia" queue?

Thanks, Major and Sue! And a very happy birthday, Andrew!

Happy Birthday Andrew! Many Happy Returns of the Day! I hope you are doing well in your endeavors! Best Wishes!

Sue, how do you stockpile these birthday photos? This one is great! Little Elmer is picking a winner and Emily is planning to eat the whole cake alone, with ketchup (or catsup), while Edgar and Edward are stuck with that green olive pudding. So perfect, and that wall looks like the house of one my friends who lived in town.

Maybe this band is the core players who work while the rest are on vacation, or waiting in line for the Matterhorn?

Major, the sub lagoon is even more fun without water. After the next drought, Disney will run the subs through the dry lagoon and tell us it’s Mars. There is an even brighter red paint called verbillion, as a result of inflation.

Thanks!

JG

Mike Cozart, it seems weird that they would go to lavender and pink, since the water filtered out colors. Those are already “mid” hues!

Nanook, yeah I was wondering what the hell that thing was, it does not look appetizing. Thanks for the verification on Storybook Land.

JB, unless Sue tells Andrew to check in, my guess is that he’ll be much too busy today! But you never know. I used to love the “Hear no evil (etc)” monkeys, not sure why. I had a little plastic sculpture of them, wonder where that disappeared to? No idea what that dessert (?) is, in my opinion it looks gross, but to each his own. I can’t decipher that ribbon either! You can tell that the Cezanne has one of his hand-crafted frames, which makes it extra valuable. Those feather adornments look so silly on the band member’s heads, maybe they got used to them. It really does look like they have cockatoos on their noggins. I used to love Magic Rocks, but in my memory, once you removed the liqued, the “crystals” lost a lot of their color, plus they were very fragile and would break spontaneously. NO I didn’t cry!

Lou and Sue, ha, I think Andrew has moved beyond GDB! It’s OK, he’s all grown up now. What’s the excuse for the rest of us? I’ll bet “Pick No Evil” kid often had a bloody nose. Yuck. I feel like if I was home and could use Photoshop I might be able to figure out the ribbon on the door, but I won’t be there until later tonight. I loved cream cheese as a kid so I would have been OK with that celery, even though it does seem like an odd thing for a kid’s party. Cake and ketchup - as my dad would have said, “Don’t knock it until you try it!”.

TokyoMagic!, I was stuck in traffic last week and the car next to me had a guy cheerfully picking away. I’m kind of glad he didn’t see that I saw him, that would have been awkward. Is that a part of a Monorail train? Even now I’m not sure.

JG, Sue has a basement the size of Area 51, it even has a small railroad to facilitate getting around. It is FULL of vintage birthday photos! Each carefully categorized. “Black and white; 1950s; nose being picked”. And so on. I hope the guys who are not playing don’t feel like they didn’t measure up. It’s just showbiz! “Verbillion”, D’OH!

"Are we seeing just a smidgen of a Monorail train, above that roof that Nanook pointed out as being part of the "Midget Autopia"".

Absolutely.

@ JG-
As that's a bottle of "ketchup" from Del Monte, it would be catsup, as back then [it appears to be the 1970's] only Heinz was calling it 'ketchup'.

Happy Birthday, Andrew! Hope you're having a good one today.

I'd love to see the Submarine Voyage pic in more detail when opening it, the wrong pic shows as it shows the Disneyland band again. Thanks, Major.

Happy birthday, Andrew!

I think that banner on the door is in Sindarin.

Every time I see the sub lagoon sans hydrogen hydroxide I think of my son, who was about 8 at the time. We were looking at a GDB image of this same 1962 scene from over by the Matterhorn, and there was a tiny person walking at the bottom of the lagoon. He looked at the photo and asked “Daddy, is that a worker or a civilian?”

JB said...

^ "And one ring to rule them all!"

Happy Birthday, Andrew. Though I guess it's belated now.

Sindarin? Those kids don't look Elvish

Major Pepperidge said...

Nanook, who knew that Heinz was changing the world, one bottle at a time?

K. Martinez, I fixed the screwed up link, sorry it took so long, I didn’t get home until late.

Chuck, I’m assuming “Sindarin” is a joke, but I don’t get it. As usual. Is it from “ILL”?? Did William Holden have anything to do with it? I want to know how you answered your son’s question! “He’s not a civilian, but don’t hate him! Treat him with respect”.

JB, ah, I get it now, “Sindarin” is a brand of breath mints.

Dean Finder, OK, I guess I need to reread LOTR. Again. For the umpteenth time. But my excuse is that it’s been a while.
