Twain Snoozles™, May 1971

Today's Snoozles are not so terrible, really - they're just sort of "same old, same old". But I'm happy to see our Mark Twain gleaming in the sunshine on our Big River, it's still a pretty sight. And, ya know, it makes me thankful that we still have the steamboat and river here in Anaheim. The Old Mill looks great, and I like the Canoe in the scene.

After carefully applying the parking brake (I love that old-timey ratcheting sound!), the Mark Twain unloads at the dock. This is (of course) pre-Big Thunder Mountain, it's almost surprising to see hillsides covered in trees and shrubs, and no southwestern rock formations.

Major, I just had a random thought…referring to your commentary today and use of ”same old, same old” — I can’t help but wonder if that’s where the phrase “so-so” originated—it’s an abbreviation (though the internet does not back me up on this).

Today’s images aren’t so-so at all. They are peaceful and relaxing, very pleasant to look at. Thank you.

  2. Oh boy, twin Twains! There are a lot of people milling around the Mill. There must be a buy-one-get-one sale on bags of flour. I see they still haven't fixed that bent chimney pipe. ;-) Looks like we can see the 'navigation' barrel floating in the water just below the Canoe. Can't tell for sure because only the thumbnail is showing up. (Harumph!)

Well harumph again! The full sized second image is displaying a slightly larger version of the first photo. At least I can verify that the 'navigation' barrel is indeed below the Canoe. Looking at the second thumbnail, is that a Tom Sawyer Raft dock on the left, or the fishing pier? Maybe the fishing pier was already gone by 1971?

Sue, I hadn't thought of that (so-so). I'm gonna say your theory is correct, even if mean ol' Google doesn't agree. (I think ol' man Google is constipated.)

Like Sue said, peaceful and pleasant, even if they are overly familiar. Thanks, Major.

JB, you need to pay-up your yearly subscription fee to Major, if you want a properly-working version of GDB.

  4. ^ Hmm, I wonder if major accepts Beanie Babies as payment?

  5. Sue: I think you are on to something regarding “ So-So”!!

  6. I’ve give a lot of Beanie Babies to see this scene again as it was.

I do love Big Thunder, it’s a great coaster, brilliantly themed etc, but Nature’s Wonderland and the Old Mill have me in thrall.

Not so-so at all. Sue, this sounds plausible, but who knows?

Thanks Major! Just what I needed this morning, even if the links are a bit garbled.

  7. Twin Twains…does that refer to the DL RR? Or is it DLRR? Either way, it’s so so…so is actually a needle pulling thread with brings us back to do…which are the deer along the banks of the non existent Rivers of America in Florida, and I’m almost sure around the future non existent Rivers of America. I’m in a bit of anti-TRE meltdown due to the recent unveiling, where tech bros have thrown tomato soup on the Mona Lisa. That being said, I very much enjoy seeing these photos this morning. In a time when art mattered, and still made money without a laser beam or a wookie. The wookies ARE cute…but not on the West Side please. Thanks Major for continuing to remind us of a different time, fading in real time, but never in the soul.

  8. @ Lou and Sue-
Webster's (and the Oxford English Dictionary) indicate the first use of the word was in 1530, and does refer to a state of mediocrity - which seems to fit perfectly in describing the current state of the Walt Disney Company - if I'm being charitable...

  9. Lou and Sue, that’s quite a random thought! I like the “same old, same old” = so-so. No idea if there is really anything to it. How do we find out?

JB, if I was going to sell bags of flour, I’d also sell bags of WET flour. Dump in a cup of tap water, add $1. You have to admit that flour is pretty dry. Profits will soar. I fixed the photo that mis-linked. Who thought of the navigation barrel? And were those barrels actually made of something like fiberglass so they wouldn’t rot in two weeks? Don’t believe everything Google says, even if GDB is platformed on Blogger, a Google thing! But DO believe everything you read on GDB.

Lou and Sue, I already pay $100,000 a year for this blog.

JB, I will, but they have to be GOOD Beanie Babies.

Mike Cozart, I know, I like it too.

JG, I’ve always liked Big Thunder, it’s a fun ride with lots of good theming. But boy do I miss the MIne Train Through Nature’s Wonderland! We will never have anything like it again.

Bu, I’ve always written “DLRR”, but I suppose both could be acceptable. I appreciate your “Sound of Music” joke, even though I’ve never seen the movie. I know what you mean about the “recent unveiling”, which I pretty much hate. “It’s not broke, but let’s fix it!” seems to be the motto of Imagineering. Why not fix Tomorrowland, rather than ruin a classic, amazing attraction? As I said to another GDB reader, the folks who go to Disneyland six times a month will love the changes.

    Nanook, 1530? Pretty incredible. Pre-Shakespeare!
