Tuna Boat and Pals, June 1962

It was pretty hard to take a bad photo of the old Chicken of the Sea tuna boat. It just looked so darn good! The color combo of coral, butterscotch, and ebony is pretty striking. There's quite a crowd crossing the gangplank, I wonder if they knew it was a restaurant, and not a ride? Mom is happy to rest her feet while sitting on that bench carved from igneous rock.

We're not too far away from the Pirate Ship - there it is in the background, along with the Storybook Land lighthouse, and Monstro's dentition. But it's the foreground that is the most fun here - pretty Snow White (along with two Dwarfs) poses with a lucky boy on a beautiful sunny day.

  1. Major-
I believe 'Coral', 'Butterscotch', and 'Ebony' were the original names of the Andrews Sisters before their singing career took-off - undoubtedly the inspiration for the Imagineers when deciding on the color palette for the pirate ship.

    Thanks, Major.

  2. Hmmph. I'm miffed. I can't find anything to make fun of in this photo! The color is nice. The people look like normal people. The focus is sharp. Blue sky. Igneous rocks... throw me a bone here! ;-p

OK, is the Dwarf on the right Sleepy? Sneezy? Or Bashful? Snow is pretty, but the Snow White characters always look too mature and modern-day stylish compared to the very youthful and innocent cartoon character. Wonderful view of the 'viewport' in the Dwarf's hat.

Nice, iconic Disney photos. Thanks, Major.

  3. In the first pic, we can see the treasure chest on the ship. I don't remember ever seeing that in person. I hope it was filled with toys or candy......or Double Fudge Zingers®.

JB, that's Sleepy, to the right of Snow White. What I want to know is, why didn't dad want "big brother" to be included in the photo? Why is he always trying to crop him out of pictures? And why did dad buy him a "Big 10" ticket book, when he bought everyone else in the family "Jumbo 15" ticket books?

Thanks, Major. This post was TOTALLY igneous!!!

  4. Major, the Tuna Boat was kind of an attraction and a restaurant all at once. In some ways, the predecessor of the Blue Bayou. Disney elevating simply eating and shopping into themed experiences. It’s a ride with food!

I wish I could get a car with that 3-phase color scheme and baby moon hubcaps. And Thrush exhaust headers.

I love the Snow White picture. Really sums up that era, with the weird squashy dwarf heads and pretty Snow White, embarrassed young guest, and classic 60’s clothes on the passers-by. Great stuff, thank you!

Just where do you think you've landed... the Dr. Phil Show or Dr. Joyce Brothers-? As The Major constantly intones: "This is a family blog-!"

  6. Nanook, oh those Andrews Sisters, I immediately imagine them in some old film, smiling and singing up a storm. No wonder they were so popular.

JB, I apologize, making fun of stuff is the bread of life, and I have deprived you. I figure igneous rocks should be good for *something*. I think that Dwarf is Sleepy, he sure looks like he’s going to nod off any second. Wasn’t Snow White supposed to be in her early teens? Child labor laws made it impossible to cast her accurately.

TokyoMagic!, mmmm, Double Fudge Zingers. I loved snack cakes back in those days, and my mom always put one (Twinkie, HoHo, Zinger, etc) in our school lunches. The other kids were so jealous. Big Brother always had this weird smell, like bacon when you first take it out of the plastic. I feel a little sorry for him now. Some Irish Spring would have really helped.

JG, I think early on the Imagineers had other ideas for restaurants that did double-duty. I feel like I remember reading about one in which guests would dine “below ground” with a big window looking out to an aquarium full of fish. Which I admit sounds kind of cool. And I think there really were cars with fancy 3-color paint schemes, I wouldn’t mind that one bit. Thrush exhaust headers? Shrug. No idea! I wonder if Snow White had to talk in a high-pitched weird voice?

Nanook, oh man, television finally got great once Dr. Phil hit the airwaves. I think we all owe Oprah a debt of gratitude. And then there’s Dr. Oz.

Clearly, The Major is a Hedman of Hooker fan...

  8. I thought the Andrew Sisters were Masha, Irina and Olga? Which one is Tony, which one is Orlando, and which one is Dawn? Or...Which Gabor is the "inside" you: Are you Eva, Magda, or Zsa Zsa? Me: I'm definitely Olga, Orlando, and I want to be Eva, but I'm Magda with a hint of Zsa Zsa. Mary or Rhoda? Red Head or Blonde? (Let's not talk about it...danger!). Speaking of TJ Hooker...Heather Locklear, Donna Mills or Morgan Fairchild? Oddly, I did do a TV movie with Morgan Fairchild, however I never saw her. That being said: 2 great photos! I know these are exactly 63 years old, but I would like them to be more like 46 years old...hey wait a tick...they are 64 years old...WHAT?! Well...the time ticks on....On Pirate Ships....many people thought that before they TRE'd the ship that it was the entrance Pirates of the Caribbean. And if you were on the Ice Cream Wagon there....you'd have to explain how to get to New Orleans Square: which is quite a feat...Big Thunder Trail get's very confusing for guests....The easiest way, however brutal that it is : through the Castle, to the Hub, Go to Adventureland...right after the Treehouse it will be on your left. Now: let's say that in Spanish. You quickly learned both Spanish and Japanese....which oddly...are very close in where the sound comes from in your mouth...so you just need to know the words. Snow looks very Snowy...and I agree that they looked rather mature compared to the wee one in the film. Big Head Dwarves rock. I wasn't a huge fan of the "new ones" mind you: that was 40+ years ago new. Kind of feels like yesterday, alas: it was many lifetimes ago. #autobiography. Thanks Major!
