Snoozles™, August 1962

It's Father's Day! That day when we salute all of the wonderful dads out there. In spite of the zillions of photo prints that we have, I'm running out of examples of just me and my Dad. But I found a good one! It is a (damaged) photo of him holding Baby Pepperidge, telling me that he hopes that I will grow up to be a famous and respected blogger. Well, I'm a blogger, at least!

It's also the FIRST DAY OF SUMMER! Sue B. sent this cute picture of an adorable girl who has just landed a monstrous bluegill. Summer always meant "fishing" for me, with annual trips to Minnesota to see my grandparents, and to visit any number of lakes. Moose Lake. Bass Lake. Kabetogama. Leech Lake. And more. I sure have fond memories of those days! Thanks for the fun photo, Sue!

****************************

As  Snoozles™ go, today's examples are not too terrible. They're just a bit "blah".

Jungle Cruise hippos go with Snoozles like ice cream goes with cake. And I like ice cream and cake! This first scan is kind of an interesting composition, though I'm sure it was a quick shot as the boat slid through the water. At least there are no silhouetted heads in the way. You can see the head of another hippo either just coming up, or just submerging; ditto in the area with the bubbles to the left.

Along the Rivers of America, we see this moose; meese are probably in my "Top 5 Ungulates", not that this should be a surprise. Just look at him! Sure, he kind of disappears against the foliage, but that is pretty cool. I'd disappear against foliage too if I could.

  1. Major-
What a dandy picture of you and your dad.
I do believe images 2 & 3 should be combined so little Becky or Bonnie, or whoever, is fishing on the Rivers of the Jungle Cruise-!

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there. And thanks to Sue and The Major.

  2. What a nice photo of little you and your dad, Major.

"Monstrous bluegill", indeed. That lunker could feed a family of 12, easily! Cute photo, Sue. Thank you.

It doesn't seem fair, or right, that the first day of summer also marks the time when the days start getting shorter. Somebody oughta do something about that.

The hippo photo is actually kinda neat. It has that "you are there" quality. In real life, the 'potamuses would probably be farther from the boat, like these are here, rather than right up next to the boat.

I wonder if Disney used a real set of moose antlers to make this critter. Moose antlers are kinda funny-looking when you think about it... and I think about it at least 3 or 4 times a day! They coulda made this guy more realistic. He doesn't look much like Bullwinkle AT ALL!

Not really Snoozles, but they ARE fun! Thanks, Major.

  3. New from REMCO::

    It’s BABY PEPPERIDGE!!!
Kids : as your parents for your OWN Baby Pepperidge!!

( house , Dad Pepperidge and accessories sold separately)
Baby Pepperidge is available in fine stores and wherever REMCO toys are sold!

ENJOY THE DAY TO ALL THE DADS!!!

JB :I know early on Disney used real animal
Pelts for some props … and they may have used a set of real antlers as a study or model but we’ve seen the clay sculptures of this animal used to make the fiberglass pieces . There were some “rivers of America “ animals that were made of concrete material as well. These were eventually replaced with more realistic fiberglass props too - some with limited animation . Until the mid 1990’s these retired concrete animals were kept in a fenced off area in the Disneyland decorating parking lot. There were some umbrella tables decorating employees could lunch at . It felt like an animal cemetery with all those faded concrete animals!!

  6. Nanook, I think that photo of my dad and me might be the last of the Baby Pepperidge photos - there are other baby photos of me of course, but no others with just my dad. I like your photo combo idea!

JB, I’m surprised that girl could land that fish, she must have arms of steel. It probably took three hours to haul him in. Ha, I read today’s blog post (after putting it together many months ago) and thought, “Is today really the first day of Summer?”. I know it is the Summer Solstice, but as you said, the days will be getting shorter now. After watching some videos, I think I would want real hippos to be far from my boat, those things are scary. Good question about the moose antlers, I assume that they made those out of fiberglass or something, but don’t really know.

Mike Cozart, Baby Pepperidge eats, cries, and wets the bed! In fact I still do those things. Wow, they used real animal pelts?? You’d think that they would decay after not much time in the elements. You can definitely tell that some of the mule deer, elk, etc, were made of something less natural, they look pretty good but a little statue-ish. I assume that they had molds of all the animals so that they could replace them occasionally.

TokyoMagic!, I can’t remember if I specifically swam in Leech Lake, but most lakes in Minnesota have leeches, so I recall getting out of the water and finding a leech stuck to an arm or a leg, with a thin trail of blood running down. Gross.

TokyoMagic!, my girl cousin once screamed when I got out of the water, I guess there was a leech on my back. I think one of her brothers must have pulled it off!

  7. Great Dad pic, Major. Thanks for sharing that!

For a minute, while the pics loaded, I thought the fisher girl WAS fishing in the Jungle Cruise. I’m kind of relieved it wasn’t true. There were bluegill in the seasonal irrigation canal near our home and I fished some out just like this.

Hippos and moose occurring naturally in proximity is unusual anywhere but Disneyland. A significant fact to remember is how big these animals are in real life. Disney had to buy a lot of Purina Hippo and Moose Chow to keep these guys going. Now we know where Bullwinkle spent his retirement.

Thanks for the Fathers Day pics!
