Sometimes these Sunday Snoozles™ are SO bad (or dull) that I truly feel guilty sharing them. But not so guilty that I am going to skip them, obviously! Visitors were charmed by the fanciful topiaries in front of It's a Small World, and today's photographer certainly was. "That bush looks just like an elephant!", he cackled. The boys on his bowling team will get a laugh out of it, if he knows them (and he does).
It looks like that giraffe needs more time to fill in, but it will do. I won't storm into City Hall and demand my money back. THIS time. I like the gold details on the façade of this ride, they remind me of the boxes full of die-cut, embossed Valentine's Day decorations that my mom had when I was a kid. In fact she still has them! I wonder if Rolly Crump used things like that when mocking up the model that he built?

Identical to those embossed, die-cut Valentine's Day "cards" that came in wax paper sleeves, rather than envelopes, so kids in grammar school could pass them out to their classmates.
Thanks, Major.
Major, I definitely would not consider these Snoozles. They’re unique angle shots of our beloved iasw — and perhaps taken by the Ant family you introduced us to, a while back.
ReplyDeleteThanks for these sunny Sunday non-Snoozles, Major.
This is a perfectly cromulent (to borrow a word from Chuck and the Simpsons) photo of the furry green elephant. His vegetable-based fur has grown in nicely. But not so much that it would make him look overly shaggy. And it's well lit, too. The highlights bring out the details of his shape. Would've been nicer if the camera was a little lower so that the elephant was higher up in the photo, but maybe that wasn't possible from where the photographer was standing.
ReplyDeleteThe un-filled-in giraffe's head looks like a dragon-shaped figurehead on the bow of a Viking ship. Probably a Norwegian Green giraffe, pinin' for the fjords. Not sure what the main focus of this picture is. The giraffe? The upside-down elephant? (or is it a hippo?). Maybe it's the Small World facade? Or the blue sky? All of the above?
I have to agree with Sue; these don't belong in the Snoozle folder. A bit dull and overly familiar perhaps, but not bad enough to be Sunday Snoozles. Perhaps you were suffering from a bad case of jaded ennui when you put this post together. :-p
Here I am, criticising you for posting decent pictures on a Sunday... What is the world coming to? ;-)
Thanks, Major.
If these are Snoozles, then sign me up. I consider an occasional murky view or odd angle part of what keeps the GDB subscription price so low. But these are really very nice. Unusual angles, to be sure, but worth a look.
ReplyDeleteThose little gold ornaments must have been a thing, everyone’s moms or aunts had a few. It’s nice that yours are still in hand. I never thought of them inspiring IASW but, I think you’re right.
Thanks for the pics and the memories, Major.

Nanook, yes, I sure remember buying those, although I also remember cards that were more “cute” and “funny” - cartoony I guess - in the early 70s as styles changed.
ReplyDeleteLou and Sue, ha, you mean the worm family! Maybe Boris did take these!!
JB, I wonder if “cromulent” has found its say into the Oxford (not Oxnard) English Dictionary yet? Vegetable-based fur, hmmm. I just bought a pair of Doc Martens for somebody who insisted on a pair that was made of “vegetable based leather”, whatever that is. I think it was just a bunch of carrots glued together in the shape of shoes. I wonder if explorers who first saw giraffes thought that they were dangerous dragons (or some such thing)? I can take constructive criticism, I just can’t take comments about my hair.
JG, ha, I am proud to be able to keep the price of GDB the same as it was 20 years ago. It’s like the hotdogs at Costco! I truly wonder if Rolly Crump had access to a box of those gold-stamped paper decorations and then used them on the original model for IASW.
Major, you’re absolutely right! I got the families mixed up. (Old age)
ReplyDeleteYou're a boomer if you still think of IASW as that new modern thing in the back of Fantasyland.
ReplyDeleteDBenson, yes—I do! Same with HM and PoTC. Those will always be the exciting, new attractions to me.
ReplyDeleteEveryone knows the exciting new attraction is Captain EO, starring Michael Jackson.
ReplyDeleteDean, ha! Especially Bu!
ReplyDeleteOh dear…Captain EO…so much hype and money…I wasn’t too great an actor I think when I saw it ..”in the presence of”… and I think MJ was acting too when he also “liked it.”….moving on to Small World…and extremely familiar vantage points…I’m trying to figure out how many miles I spent riding that ride…I’ll be back with the stats…I’ve grown to like it again..and yes..I loved those crispy gold gingerbready kind of “Balemtimes”…as we called them…those were the fancy ones we never got…but I guess I got them anyway on the “happiest ship that ever sailed”…or was it boat? No matter . Thanks Major!
