Randos

I have a pair of interesting RANDOS for you, both happen to be medium-format ("127" 40mm X 40mm) slides, which is always nice. Both are undated.

First up is this view taken by Dad as the family unloads kids, strollers, and whatever else they need before heading to the nearest tram pickup area (the relative nearness of the Grand Hotel shows that they were quite a ways from the ticket booths). Big brother is plenty old enough to walk, but little sis needs a stroller. I think Mom has a towel over her shoulder, perhaps to drape over the stroller in case sis needs a nap.

From a different photographer comes this photo taken right near the Yacht Bar (out of frame to our left), with all of the usual features in that area, we know them well. A line of guests manages to wait in the shade of the Monorail beamway, and they can pass the time watching the Subs come and go in the beautiful tropical lagoon. A fellow in the distance waves to the photographer; we see you!

  1. Little sis is about to leap out of that stroller, and big brother has an arrow stuck in his head. I hope they had a fun day at Disneyland!

    Thanks, Major.

  2. Major-
Listen, kid - just because Mom dressed you doesn't mean you can't put your foot down when she forces you out-the-door wearing stripes and plaids-!

    Thanks, Major.

  3. I think little sis is making a break for it! Looks like she's climbing out the stroller to join her big brother, and walk the mile or two to the ticket booths. Speaking of big brother... stripes and plaids? It actually looks good.

I wonder if the guy drawing attention to himself was part of the photographer's group? Or maybe he's a complete stranger and when the photos came back from the developers, the photographer was so annoyed at the guy that he got rid of the photo. And now you have it! Screechy is flying away to her nest with another egg. How many does she have???

Oh dear, I see Sue and Nanook discussed all the things that I did. TOO BAD! I'm not changin' a thing! ;-b

    Thanks for the Randos, Major.

  4. Sue, I think Steve Martin must have seen that first photo, and it inspired his "arrow-through-the-head" shtick. ;-)

I know we've seen the Grand Hotel like this before, with a see-through upper floor. What I can't remember is, was it decided that it was still under construction? Or are we just seeing into a convention or banquet room that extended from the west side of the hotel all the way to the east side?

JB, I bet that guy in the second pic was one of the earliest pioneers in photo-bombing!

    Thanks, Major!

  5. Photo 1, what’s the make of that station wagon? We had a Buick wagon around this time, and then later a big Oldsmobile wagon. Our son insisted on stripes and plaid about that age too.

Photo 2, the lady at left looks just like my mom. I uncovered a big stash of slides from my very early childhood and she wore white, or maybe silver glasses frames and the same hairdo. No Disney pics yet, but I live in hope.

Schmedley in the distance waving, maybe he found that ticket book dropped by the photographer?

Nice views today, Major. Thank you!

  6. Lou and Sue, maybe having an arrow in your head is kind of nice. You don’t know! ;-)

Nanook, if only they could have somehow worked polka dots into his ensemble.

JB, that little girl ran and ran, so fast that her parents couldn’t keep up. She was eventually raised at Disneyland with the feral cats. Now she plays Tinker Bell! I wondered the same thing about the waving man, was he a friend/family member, or was he just annoying? WHY NOT BOTH? Screechy has enough love for thousands of eggs.

TokyoMagic!, you never know where inspiration will come from. I was also wondering if the Grand Hotel was still under construction, it looks weird. I’ve never seen any other hotel that looked like that. I have a photo of a guy standing right in front of the Grand Hotel, I need to scan it someday! There’s something about the photo-bomb guy that looks like he needed to be the life of the party at all times.

JG, I love that station wagon! If I could afford classic cars, I might have two or three vintage wagons in my vast collection. Jay Leno would come over to admire them. I kind of wish my family had used slide film instead of print film, though I understand that slides were only of use if you projected them. Still, all these years later, slides can look like they were taken yesterday! I wish my name was Schmedley!

  7. @ TM!-
"What I can't remember is, was it decided that it was still under construction?"

Since the original Wilbur Clark's Crest Hotel opened on August 1, 1965, we know this 'look' can't be from the original construction. I don't have the exact date from when it changed hands into the Grand; it's certainly possible at that time remodeling was done creating the look seen here - or maybe we're just seeing 'a convention or banquet room...' I do know by May 9th of 1969 it had changed into the Grand Hotel; but how long prior to that date, I don't know.

    @ JG-
That's a 1964 Buick Skylark Sports Wagon, in Sunburst Yellow... "It has a raised roof so you can sit tall, and a new kind of shaded glass so you can look up and out, and a forward-facing third seat. Need we say new?"

    1. I can revise the 1969 date to [at least] March 1, 1967, which is interesting, as in less than 20 months, the hotel would've changed hands. Wilbur Clark (who originally built the Desert Inn in Las Vegas) had plans to build a chain of 200 hotels in the US, but died on August 27, 1965 - which may explain the relatively-short ownership of his Anaheim Crest Hotel location...

  8. I took a girl to her senior ball in 1967 in a Sunburst Yellow 1964 Buick Skylark Coupe! True story!

Any photo with the Monorail beam and Skyway and Screechy and Matterhorn is a good photo.

    Thanks, Major
