Blurzles™, May 1961

Oh Blurzles™, why for art thou? (Dang, this blog is classy as heck!). I just scanned a batch of slides from May, 1961, and of the 24-ish scans, I'd say that 20 of them are blurry - I threw away half of them, sadly. But a few were "just OK", and some others were suitable for some Snoozles/Blurzles.

See what I mean? Somebody had The Yips, ruining what would otherwise have been an interesting photo of the House of the Future taken late in the afternoon. Looking at the transparencies on a light table, I couldn't tell that so many of the slides were flawed, and I was really looking forward to seeing this one in detail. D'oh!

Same batch, different location: Grandma and granddaughter are on the path that leads to Adventureland, perhaps they were on their way to enjoy a ride on the Jungle Cruise. But first, would you mind posing for a blurry photo? "Not at all!".

Just when will 'AI' finally be able to 'sharpen-up' blurry images, putting an end to Snoozles and Blurzles once and for all-? It'll be a great day here on GDB, that's all I can say.

    Thanks, Major.

Major, don’t ‘knock’ the blurriness. It hides wrinkles, and probably also grandma’s baggy, saggy hose.

Fun pics, nonetheless. Thank you, Major.

  3. Blurzle lady looks like she's fishing with a pole in the 'Pond of the Future'. I wonder if she's using futuristic bait? (I know it's a railing behind her.)

I don't recognize the pattern on that shopping bag. I also can't figure out if grandma is wearing a hat, maybe one of those clear plastic rain bonnets? Or maybe she has a really tight perm?

Blurzles are good. Blurzles make us use our imagination. (I'm trying to be cheerful after my grumpy comment the other day... can you tell?) ;-)

    Thanks, Major.

  4. "House of the Future Lady" has a third eye!

I wonder if Grandma's clodhoppers were comfortable for a day at Disneyland?

    Thanks for the Blurzles, Major!

Blurzie or not, I'll take any view of the ever-amazing House of the Future...just look at the cantilevered living room, and spires over at the neighbor's place. Classy mom taking gardening notes.

  6. The first thumbnail didn't look that bad until I imbigend it. But it still triggered memories of an ahead of it's time house.

Mom in that photo must have a tiny bit of Bigfoot DNA that is showing up in her pose.

Thanks, Major. If there were no blurzles we wouldn't appreciate the better focused.

  7. Oh man, photo 1 is like a trap. The thumbnail isn’t bad, but the photo itself almost attacks your eyesight. Did the photographer sneeze as he triggered the shutter? Definite stereo effect going on, almost a double exposure. Imagine your neighbors living in a literal castle and your place is made of plastic.

Photo 2 looks like it was meant to be a nice keepsake image and the photographer’s hay fever intervened. The golden light on the gate is nice, too bad this one didn’t turn out.

Thank you Major, even for the might-have-beens.

  8. Nanook, I believe that there are already some AI filters/apps that can sharpen blurry images to a degree, though at the moment I’m not really wanting to pay for any of them!

Lou and Sue, good point! Especially my saggy hose problem.

JB, the Pond of the Future had cyber-trout in it! I recognize that bag pattern, but I don’t have one like it so I can’t show one. I actually thought that the pattern was from earlier than 1961. It does look like Grandma is wearing something on her head, but I’ll be damned if I can tell what it is.

TokyoMagic! the trouble with a third eye is that nobody makes sunglasses that will shade the one on your forehead.

MS, I am in favor of cantilevered houses in general, it always looks cool. Somehow Mom looks smaller than I would expect in relation to the HOF, or else the house is bigger than I usually think about.

zach, your experience is much like mine, the slides looked OK when viewed in their tiny state. But scanning revealed their flaws. Such a bummer! So funny that you mentioned the Bigfoot pose, I literally just wrote a blog post (which you will see in a year!) riffing on that same idea.

JG, the photographer must have sneezed A LOT, since most of the photos are blurry. Did they just have the shutter speed set too slow? As I said in my text, I threw most of these scans away, and probably should have thrown the actual slides away as well. These kind of remind me of my grandfather’s slides, I was so excited to find them in a closet, only for many of them to be blurry.

  9. What a neighborhood - a castle next door while the neighbors across the way live in a log home. Next to them is a grass shack. This, people, is why we need zoning laws!

These photos might not be that great, but they still bring back great memories. Of course, they’re not my memories, but that’s the curse of living with superpowers.

    Perhaps I’ve said too much…
