Vintage Snapshots

Here are more scans of some vintage snapshots from various years, but mostly from the mid-1960s (and possibly into the 1970s). I bought this batch for one single interesting photo print, but now you are stuck looking at the rest of them! Sorry.

It's lunchtime! You have to keep your body fueled up for an entire day's worth of excitement. Those folding chairs sure look comfortable! Everyone ordered a cold iced tea, and mom has the World's Largest Salad. The kid has an ostrich-plumed hat, so he gets extra credit. For the life of me, I could not figure out where they were eating. The folks going up steps in the background (to the left) really baffled me.

Some of the same people pose by the bridge to Frontierland, but the clothing has changed. Perhaps they were locals who went to the park regularly. Mom's DEVO glasses are super cool.

This one might have been taken during the same visit as the first scan, and this print has the helpful date of  "August, 1965" printed on it. The mighty Columbia looks impressive in the afternoon sunlight, and a Canoe scoots along, barely visible on the River.

Major-
I'm just going to throw this out for an odd [but very-likely correct] thought: The first image was taken at the Farmers Market, at 3rd & Fairfax... Those [overbuilt] folding chairs and round tables with laminated tops, not to mention the umbrellas, could easily be from there; and the stairway at the far left could've easily been heading to the upstairs dining area. Yes, think outside of the box.

Thanks Major, for the puzzle.

The boy with the plumed hat was ahead of his time. His hat is pink and blue; the color combo that would take Disney by storm in a few years. Pink and blue have always been popular in Disneyland, but it was more tasteful then. Nowadays, his hat would be deep magenta and electric blue... plus glitter.

The boy is stuffing something into his face, just like the previous photo. Maybe he has a pet tapeworm that needs frequent feeding. Is that colorful arc in the upper right of the image just a scratch in the emulsion? It looks like a paraglider. That split pea soup behind the family looks tasty!

The Columbia has just left the loading dock. We can see the A-frame steps with the retractable gangplank in the background.

Nanook, but would the boy be wearing his Disneyland hat at a different location? Possibly.

Thanks for the photos, Major.

Looking at other vintage photos of the LA Farmer’s Market, the umbrella, tables, and chairs certainly match. If Nanook is wrong, then I’ll be a three-legged horntoad!

Thanks, Major!

Bingo. Farmers Market. The same tables are still there. Obviously the day after Disneyland and the kid can't resist sporting his fancy new chapeau.

Late to comment, but yes, definitely Farmers Market at 3rd & Fairfax.

The hat might be Disneyland though.

We often stopped at Farmers Market on the way home after a Park visit. Looks like these folks are doing the same.

The other two pics are definitely Disneyland.
Thanks Major!

Nanook, whoa, the Farmer’s Market! I would have never come up with that. No wonder I couldn’t figure out where (in Disneyland) that photo was. The kid’s hat did all of the “heavy lifting” for me! There was another mystery photo from this batch (on January 18th), I’m guessing that one wasn’t actually Disneyland either.

JB, when I first looked at that photo, I thought the boy’s hat had two plumes, one blue, one magenta. Then I realized that the magenta was just the lady in the distance. I’m trying to think if I’ve seen other colors for the plumes. Yellow? Not sure. Boys that age can eat and eat, I should know, I was one once. I was skinny too! I guess that is a scratch in the emulsion, the photo is in the vault now and I’ll never see it again. I wonder if it’s possible that the Farmer’s Market also sold those hats?

Chuck, what happened to your other leg?? ;-D I’ve been to the Farmer’s Market of course, but not for many years, and the tables and chairs sure didn’t make any impression on me.

MS, it seems everyone knew but me!

JG, the last time I went to the Farmer’s Market was after The Grove had taken much of the property. But it was early on a Sunday morning, and it was quiet and nice, sort of cozy. Early birds were there eating their breakfasts, and most of the shops hadn’t opened yet, but it felt like “old Los Angeles” in that one little corner.

This is such an educational place. Today i learned about the LA Farmer's Market, which looks phenomenal, judging by the sheer size of the place, the many twisty turny passages, the website and the history. Amazing! And so close to the tar pits! Wow.
Great pictures as usual! Just popping in to say thanks again for sharing, and for the edumacation on new places I've never visited!

The Farmers Market was/is not only great fun just as is with so much wonderful food (I drive across LA to visit my butcher there) and is adjacent to The Grove, but as a kid, I would go up those stairs to reach the office where they gave out free tickets to be an extra on all sorts of TV and filming shows. There were always were many to choose from, some next door at CBS studios. The bus loads would show up to get them, which seems possible in the photo. Today the upper area is additional seating.

Major-
It's nice to know I'm not totally crazy [or, no more so than usual]. Although I see no one caught my obvious 'reference' blunder earlier, by describing it as "Think outside the box, but naturally it should've read Think outside the berm-!

Tom, nice to hear from you! The Farmer’s Market is a great piece of L.A. history; it’s a lot smaller now, but if you ever find yourself in the area, it’s worth a visit. Wander around The Grove too! The Tar Pits are only four minutes away. Plus there’s the LA County Museum of Art, the Peterson Automotive Museum, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures… there’s lots to do!

MS, when I lived in Pasadena I liked to go to the Farmer’s Market early on weekends, mostly to explore the shops. I still have a few Disneyland pieces that I bought in the antiques shops that used to be there. Do you remember any TV shows that you got to watch as they filmed?

Nanook, I admit that I did not catch your hinted reference!
