Hey! It's GDB friend MS's birthday! And you know what that means - Sue B. found another great vintage birthday photo to share. I'm worried about the boy at the end of the table, he's trying to blow up that balloon, but it looks like the balloon is stronger. Will his little brother do any better? That's a pretty low bar. Mom is wearing a party hat, but is thinking about wearing another one. When else will she have the chance? NEVER! It's exciting to see that there is an actual Van Gogh "Sunflowers" painting on the wall, bought at a thrift shop for only $2. Smurf cups, plates, and a table cloth assure us that this will be the party to end all parties.
************
Meanwhile, howsabout some randos? From July, 1960 comes this photo of three young girls posing in front of Storybook Land with the Piper Pig and the Practical Pig. All three girls wear the same style of souvenir hat, though one has gone rogue and went with the blue scarf rather than the red one.
Next, from June 22, 1965 we have this nice view of the Indian Dance Circle as seen from the new-ish amphitheater-style seating; obviously the crowds could be considerable on a Summer day. Younger children were still encouraged to come down and sit on benches nearer to the action. On the river, two Canoes embark on their journey through a very convincing Frontier.
Happy Birthday MS-! I hope your birthday party chose the E-Z Blo balloons to avoid both exhaustion and embarrassment.
ReplyDeleteMajor-
Mom is sending that hat over to 'Bud', as wearing the party hat will increase his lung power - since the image is flopped, he will need all the help he can get.
STORY BOOK LAND... make no mistake about it.
Thanks to Sue and The Major.
It's MS's birthday! What a coincidence, today is my UNbirthday! Happy birthday, MS.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! At first I thought that the genuine Van Gogh "Sunflowers" painting was one of the rare mirror-image examples. Only two(2) are known to exist! But then I (and Nanook) realized that the image is flipped, and it's just a regular unflipped genuine Van Gogh. Which, as we know, are a dime a dozen.... Oh well.
Big brother sure looks like he's in pain. I bet blood squirted out of his eyes! There are no candles on the cake so I can't tell who the birthday boy is. Probably the little guy, judging from the decorations. I tried reading the name on the cake; it looks like it might be "Mike".
Thanks to Sue for organizing the birthday party.
The Pigs look a little awkward sitting on that bench. I wonder if the two older girls are twins? Practical Pig has a pink carnation (?) in his hand (Hoof? Front foot?) Probably fake, or maybe animatronic. As Nanook noted, this was back in the era when we had "Story Book Land"; three words. Hey, where's the Fiddler Pig? Maybe he's taking the photo.
This is a really nice view of the Dance Circle. The three 'Eagle' dancers are in an interesting action pose, which adds excitement to the picture. And we can see all of the colorful feather decorations on the poles. Usually we only see a couple of them.
Nice Randos, Major. Thanks.
I think the mom in the first pic was just about to take that hat off of her head, and then use the two hats together to do her infamous "1990" Madonna impersonation.
ReplyDeleteHey, where's the Fiddler Pig?
JB, he's being eaten by the Big Bad Wolf.
Thanks for the Randos, Major. And thanks for the vintage B-day pic, Sue. Happy birthday, MS!
Happy Birthday MS, many happy returns of the day!
ReplyDeleteThat balloon is definitely fighting back, too bad we can’t see how the battle came out. The furniture looks just like Mrs. G’s parent house. How do we know that Van Gogh didn’t paint those flowers in a mirror like Norman Rockwell?
“Rogue Pigs in Story Bookland”, a novel by Mickey Spillane. Cute kids having fun, the purpose of Disneyland.
Excellent photo of the Indian Dance Circle, just as I remember it.
Thanks Sue and Major!
JG
The 3 little girls and 2 big pigs image is kind of weird. The girls had Fiddler Pig for breakfast (Ham and Eggs). And now Piper and Practical are plotting their revenge.
ReplyDeleteLove the Indian Village pic. Thanks, Major.
Happy Birthday, MS.
ReplyDeleteNanook, don’t be silly, E-Z Blo balloons weren’t invented until the early 90s! I like posting birthday pictures reversed, it helps to keep me young.
ReplyDeleteJB, I happen to own several Van Gogh “Sunflowers” paintings, I showed them to an expert who proclaimed them to be “neato”. Blowing up balloons will soon be an Olympic sport, as athletes progress through harder and harder balloons, until only one contestant is left. Inspiring! I think those pigs look awkward *period*, so looking odd while sitting on a bench is just par for the course. It does seem to me that we usually only saw two eagle dancers, maybe the amphitheater-style seating somehow changed the way they choreographed the dances?
TokyoMagic!, I don’t remember Madonna wearing two party hats on her head in 1990 ;-) !
JG, I’d like to think that the boy finally started getting lots of air into the balloon, when it suddenly started fighting back! All the air rushed into the kid’s head, making it explode. There’s a lesson for all of us, but I don’t know what it is. Remember when Snoopy revealed that he had a Van Gogh in his doghouse? After the doghouse burned down, he got an Andrew Wyeth.
K. Martinez, if you ask me, the weirdness is what makes the 3 Pigs photo great! More weird Disneyland pictures, please.
Happy birthday MS! That vintage photo is a humdinger, thanks Sue! Looks like Mommy has started on her "juice"...a good thing as the cake needed to be baked. Fine art, and a questionable lamp (and questionable dining chairs) sum up the birthday celebration. There are some empty "juice" glasses on the table: guess those people guzzled then "got tired" and are in the living room on probably a crushed velvet something or rather...there is a box of Polaroid film there next to the Diet Coke can....the scenario seems rather current with the Smurfs and all, but my sense of time and years is not on pointe anymore....1980 to me seems like a few years ago. Piper Pig, Practical Pig...and Creepy Pigs....they ARE creepy...I'm glad they went to the "big heads wearing Keds" after these Stephen King inspired alien things. Story Book Land: yes: done with that now. "Stroller with the fringe on top"...not sure I've seen that before: buy why is it on the dock. Hmmmm....Aside from all of that: the "small world" inspired hats on the girls are lovely....way ahead of their time. Thanks Major and Sue for some thought provoking shots on this Libran Birthday for MS. So close to Virgo! Very organized people who take their judicious time to make the right decisions!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday MS. I hope you get a cardboard Rainbow Brite (I think) hat at your party.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday MS! May you enjoy your birthday cake...no matter how it looks!! KS
ReplyDeleteHa! I flopped, again. (Major, between the both of us, we have 8 eyes - and we still can't figure-out these birthday party slides!) Now I know why I couldn't read that birthday cake. :oP
ReplyDelete!SM ,yadhtriB yppaH I wish you the happiest of birthdays -- you should go to Disneyland, today!!
Fun photo of the little girls with those crazy pigs, and very nice view of the Indian Dance Circle.
Thanks, Major.
Happy Birthday MS! Pretty sure Fiddler Pig is at MS's party.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Major and Sue
Zach
Bu, ha ha, my niece used to call my sister’s glass of wine “mom juice”. Now that’s what we all call it. I wonder if that 70s (?) decor will ever come back in style? The way mid-century modern stuff has, I mean. Hopefully not. At least mid-mod is clean, uncluttered, and appealing. Crushed velvet, who ever thought of such a thing? “This velvet is too perfect, let’s mess it up”. You’re probably right, the Smurfs probably means that the photo is from the 80s. I like the older creepy characters, but I understand why they made them cuter. I remember being scared of them when I was really young. And now. I guess the hats do sort of resemble gondolier hats? Or something else. French schoolgirl hats? Something European and classy, anyway.
ReplyDeleteDean Finder, THE DREAM!
KS, other than the fact that the kid’s cake has stuff all over it (too much!), it looks like a pretty nice cake. Did mom make it, or was it store-bought?
Lou and Sue, I am pretty sure I wrote the text for the birthday pic while looking at the thumbnail, but I still should have noticed that it was flopped when I cropped it and cleaned it up! Oh well, it’s not exactly the end of the world.
zach, MS does enjoy fiddle music, I seem to remember him mentioning it once!
MS must've passed out from blowing up that balloon....either that or he really did follow my advice and went to Disneyland today. We're saving you a piece of cake, MS.
ReplyDeleteI was actually celebrating in Walt's Office at the Studio! Wonderful way to Bday. THANKS for happy wishes all!!!
ReplyDeleteMS
What a great way to celebrate, MS! Sorry I am late for your special day. Hopefully Sue put a slice of cake in the fridge for me.
ReplyDelete^ I did
