Here's a nice pair of photos from July, 1969. Neil Armstrong wished he was at Disneyland, but his mom made him go to the Moon instead. Stupid Moon! I love this afternoon shot from Fantasyland, a mom and her stylish daughter pose, surrounded by all kinds of fun stuff. Dumbi! The Pirate Ship (complete with unfurled sails)! Skyway gondolas! The Casey Jr. station! And even a bit of the Matterhorn. It looks like it was a great day to be at the park (sorry, Neil).
This blog has nothing to do with gorillas (though I love 'em)...fellow bloggers have inspired me to share vintage images of Disneyland from my personal collection. But don't be surprised if you see something from a World's Fair, Knott's Berry Farm, or someplace else that is cool!
Major-
ReplyDeleteHubba, hubba to the young lady parading around in her plaid, sleeveless shortalls-!
Thanks, Major.
A riot of Disneyland color! The stylish daughter looks like she's picking up an alien transmission inside her head. She should've wore her tinfoil hat! There's a lot of red Skyway buckets gliding overhead. I bet the aliens are responsible for that too. It's a toss-up for who gets the Fashion Award here: The lady in the white, yellow, and orange floral(?) pants, in front of the ticket booth. Or the lady next to her with the psychedelic flowery dress.
ReplyDeleteThat guy does indeed look like Ernest Borgnine; not so much in the face (I zoomed in), but the body shape and the clothes. I like that girl's dark blue hat with the bright red ostrich plume; very distinctive! 1969 must have been the year for women to wear yellow, white, and orange floral clothing; there's another one to the right of Mom.
More iconic Disneyland photos! Thanks, Major.
Fashions! I think "Dad" was taking these photos, as blue jump suit is also posing in photo two. You can't miss her, and I'm sure others that day could not miss Electra Woman and Dyna Girl here in Disneyland. For 1969, Sub employee looks a wee older than the typical NASA guy found in the roster of employees, but I suppose it does make McHales sense. I don't often see that show in reruns if at all. If I was a kid and had to choose Disneyland or the Moon to visit: it would be without doubt: Disneyland. The Moon does not interest me that much...bunch of rocks and some flags that some guys planted a while ago. Back to girl receiving alien messaging: looks like she has a "B" ticket in her hand: where might they be headed to? I like how mom's headband coordinates with her waist tie. They REALLY had to think about these outfits before they headed out. They are quite "curated". It's interesting how Dad took the photo with the color coordinated umbrella is behind Mom. I'm not sure it's a coincidence. Thanks for the return to the last of the Swinging '60's!
ReplyDeleteI think the hat that Commander Ernie Borgnine is wearing, is a souvenir hat that was sold at the park for years. It had a little embroidered patch of Steamboat Willie on the front, just above the bill.
ReplyDeleteThat Tomorrowland still looks futuristic to me, today!
Bu, it looks like the mom is also holding a "B" ticket. Maybe they wanted to go on Casey Jr., but didn't realize they had already walked past it's entrance?
Thanks, Major!
Neil was a good man to follow his mother’s wishes, especially in such a tough choice. I hope he brought her a rock.
ReplyDeleteOld Fantasyland might have been cheaper and less detailed than what we have today, but it made it up in color and sheer exuberance. That little Casey ticket booth for example. I’m glad we still have it. Mom and daughter are doing their part. My Mom had clothes like those ladies in back stepping down from the platform, wild floral patterns and straw purses.
Another beautiful pic of The Best Tomorrowland, Mom is striking a pose here. I wish Melissa could explain the ballet position. Another young lady in a floral dress is very well turned out, hair, sunglasses, straw bag. She definitely has The Look. I remember Dad laughing at McHales Navy, he was in the Navy so it makes sense. I don’t recall anything of the show except Mr. B.
Thanks Major, a little classic Disneyland to close out the week, a good thing.

Nanook, yes, that gal is very pretty!
ReplyDeleteJB, the color really does add a lot of energy and cheerfulness (cheerfulosity) to that first picture! Hmmm sounds like you know a thing or two about receiving alien transmissions! All of my transmissions are from Russia. I love the “exuberant” patterns on so much of the clothing - again, cheerfulosity. You know, it is often odd to see celebrities out in public, so it’s only natural that Ernest might look a b it different than you expect. But it’s him! Ask him to wrassle, and he’ll convince you.
Bu, is it still a jump suit if it doesn’t cover the legs? I don’t know, I just never thought of that kind of clothing as a jump suit. I kind of doubt that the guy is a Sub employee, he might have just purchased a souvenir hat in Tomorrowland. He loves it when people salute him. As for Disneyland vs. the Moon… I can go to Disneyland ANY time! The Moon… not so much. So I’d choose the Moon. Yes it is desolate, but image walking around on a something other than the Earth?! And as you said, I doubt Dad was so “on the ball” that he knew that those umbrellas coordinated with Mom’s outfit!
TokyoMagic!, wow, I knew that those “Skipper caps” were sold at Disneyland, but I did not know that they had Steamboat Willie on them. That feels like something they’d do today! Was Casey Jr. a mere “B” ticket back then? That seems so wrong.
JG, Neil knew that he would have heck to pay if he didn’t listen to his mother. I agree with you re: Fantasyland… the current version is beautiful and impressive, but there is just something about the old one. There was a designer, was it Norma Kamali (sp?)? She used to have bold colorful floral patterns, you used to see that sort of thing a lot back in those days. Meanwhile: I’d hoped that we might have Melissa back one of these days, but I’m starting to feel like that’s not going to happen, which makes me sad.
Upon close inspection that gentleman in the “yacht” cap may very well be an employee. He has the black standard shoes and he is wearing the exact outfit the SUBMARINE VOYAGE attraction foreman ( later called a LEAD ) wore - minus the coat …. And looking from what the guests are wearing it’s probably too warm to be wearing the costume coat. ALSO look closely at his shirt; you can see what would be the correct period employee name badge: a narrow oval bluish - grey tag about over his pocket. His cap also has a black and gold embroidered patch - which the submarine voyage cap used during summer as opposed to the metal badge… by this time the cloth patch was used more often .
ReplyDeleteHe’s also walking away from the SUBMARINE VOYAGE loading area !!!
ReplyDeleteOr …. He’s a “serviceman in uniform” and received a discount on his Disneyland admission….. as servicemen in uniform and members of the clergy did at this time.
Mike Cozart, you could be right! I can’t argue with your clues, and the “narrow oval bluish-gray tag” is hard to make out, but one never knows. I guess I assumed that most Submarine Voyage CMs tended to be younger?
ReplyDeleteMike Cozart, ah, that’s a good thought, he wanted that Serviceman discount!
Sometimes I wonder, if Walt were still with us today, and he knew of this blog, would he agree with most of what we say here (on a daily basis)? I think he would. Also, how neat would it be if he not only read GDB, but commented from time to time as well!
ReplyDeleteJB… That we discuss is wonderful in and of itself.
ReplyDeletePositive Walt would love the fact.
