Sometimes I acquire slides one at a time, sometimes I get lucky and get 20 or 30 at a time. But today's lot consisted of only two slides. They're pretty good though!
First up is this view that I assume is from the Disneyland Hotel, up on the Monorail platform. Or was this somehow taken from the Monorail itself, with no motion-blur in the foreground? We're looking across West Street (named after James West) toward the vast parking lot. Yes, that's it, even though it's hard to see through the smog. If you look real hard you can see Wilbur Clark's Crest Hotel, and to the right of that, Melodyland. Main Street Station is also barely visible.
This one is extra-fun, with the Tomorrowland Space Girl (I've actually never known if she had an official moniker), posing with a cute little girl who hopes that she will someday live on the Moon. They are near the entrance to Tomorrowland (the Plaza is behind us) and the America the Beautiful attraction.
Major-
ReplyDelete'Space Girl's' outfit definitely gives a new meaning to helmet hair. Heck, that helmet could contain a built-in hair dryer. Just think of all the time it could save.
Thanks, Major.
The Tomorrowland Space Girl's hair is growing to the shape AND the size of her helmet!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cool 1954 pics, Major!
Nanook...ha, ha! You beat me by one minute!
ReplyDeleteAre you sure this isn't the surface of Venus, Major? Wow, the parking lot looks full! Although, it's [cough] difficult to [cough, cough] tell through all this [cough] smog.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if the little girl made it to the Moon, but she'd make an excellent Alice. Love the big, bulbous hairdo on Space Girl. It looks like the inside of her helmet (the clear one, not her hair) is starting to fog up a little at the bottom.... Looks like being a Space Person would be unpleasant.
I wrote my comment before reading what Nanook and Tokyo! had to say about Space Girl's helmet hair. Seems like we all had the same reaction! :-)
Thanks, Major. [cough]
Wow! That's some parking lot! In fact, we can go home now. There's no way the park is gonna be any better than this!
ReplyDeleteSpace Girl doesn't look particularly thrilled, does she?
"Alice" is actually Shirley Finford, who invented Disney Bounding! Ok, I might have made that up. It IS afternoon, though, as they are both squinting into the sun. Maybe that's why Space Girl isn't thrilled- she's already had a full day of it. And it doesn't help that Shirley keeps bragging about the Disney Bounding thing...
the (#1) smog, and (#2) parking lots full of those models of cars... that's exactly how I remember growing up in The Valley. Ah, memories!
ReplyDeleteI notice the red car in the hotel lot seems to have a nicely pressed shirt hanging from that special hook some cars had above the rear left passenger window (!)
remember the recent Chancellor of Germany that had Helmut hair?
Oh, the Parking Lot! Arguably the First Attraction of the day. This is a splendid view too, in spite of the haze. “Never Trust Air You Can’t See.”
ReplyDeleteGood view of the Power Lines too. I approve this picture.
Space Girl would undoubtedly be good company on a trip to the Moon. Her skirt is somewhat short too, it’s a great look on her. I can confirm those silver lamé space trousers can get pretty warm. I’m sure she had help getting that helmet on over the hair. Little Alice will remember this day all her life, as I remember my photo with the Space Man.
Major, my Nostromo reference yesterday was to the Conrad novel, not the movies, although it is worthy of note that several spaceship names in the film series were taken from the novel. Nostromo is repeatedly referred to as “a man of the people”, much like Mickey. An ebook is available at Gutenberg if you like. Highly recommended.

Nanook, I almost made a comment about Space Gal’s helmet hair. She used a full can of VO5 every morning!
ReplyDeleteTokyoMagic!, soon her hair will fill the whole helmet!
TokyoMagic!, you are both winners.
JB, that definitely looks like a very full parking lot, in fact I can’t think of any other parking lot pix of mine that show it quite that packed. And yes, that smog looks particularly nasty, my eyes hurt just looking at the photo. I think the “fog” at the bottom of the Space Gal’s helmet is actually the reflections of her neck “baffles”, at least she had that porthole to breathe through, not that it would help completely.
Stu29573, ha ha, yep, the family drove cross-country to go to Disneyland, but that parking lot was already more than they could handle. Luckily they only paid 25 cents to park. Now they can go to Knott’s Berry Farm. I’d forgotten about Disney Bounding, I used to hear about that on podcasts. I guess people still do that? I’ll dress as Pooh, a red shirt and no pants.
LTL, maybe I’m fooling myself, but it does seem as if we don’t have quite as many horrible smoggy days as we used to. Unleaded gas? Catalytic converters? I noticed the thing in the red car, but did not ID it as a shirt!! I do remember Helmut Hair! :-)
JG, I just watched a Fresh Baked video, it’s so odd to think that the old Downtown Disney parking lot will be gone soon, they are building another, even bigger parking structure, and part of the bus drop-off area will become Avatarland, which I am not enthused by. I appreciated the technical aspects of those films, but can’t say I really loved them. I am in the minority though. I just noticed the subtle “D” on Space Gal’s hip, kind of a fun detail. I know that you were referring to the Conrad novel, that’s why I mentioned him in my reply to you! I was joking about the spaceship from “Alien”!
Major, yes the air is soooo much better now. The 60s smog era was traumatic psychically and physically.
ReplyDeleteah yes, the famous fashionable statesman: Herr Helmut !
I'd guess Space Girl's helmet isn't very optically clear. Along with the intense sunlight, no wonder she's squinting in that terrarium.
ReplyDeleteMy wife just commented that she had an Astronaut Barbie with a nearly identical outfit. It just has pink metallic space pants, though.
