Kids In Fantasyland, July 1976

It's dusk in Fantasyland, and three kids have been shoehorned into a single Dumbo vehicle for a spin. Note how, when the elephants were at rest, they were lower than the ground level, making it easy for guests (even pint-sized guests) to step into their own personal Dumbo. The Skyway Chalet is in the background, but I don't see any gondolas, so perhaps that ride was out of order.

Earlier in the day, some of the same kids met Gideon the cat, a goofy rascal from "Pinocchio". I wonder if they actually recognized the character, or if they were just happy to see this fuzzy fellow? The lady in the background has learned that making raspberry noises into a cardboard tube amplifies the effect considerably.

Yay, the skinny waterfall to the left of the Storybook Land cave is working! Sadly, it has been broken or just turned off, for years now. Shame on you, Disney!

That lady with the cardboard tube is standing next to a drinking fountain, so perhaps she was only making those "raspberry" noises, when someone bent over to get a drink of water!

Major & TM!-
That woman is actually playing reveille. And aren't those the same kids we've seen before - the towhead with the giant belt buckle, along with his nattily-attired friends-? They seem to be making the rounds of all the costumed characters who are on stage.

Thanks, Major.

Kids havin' a blast at Disneyland. I never get tired of seeing that and remembering my childhood at the park. I think that is an all-day candy cane left over from Christmas past. Yum. Thanks Major.

If you look closely you will notice that Dumbo's ears are at slightly different angles. This was done to prevent them from creating too much lift, which caused the pachyderms to fly off the ride and land somewhere outside the berm. (some even made it to the Tinker Bell parking section!) Safety first!

Ooh, two bi-centennial flag visors in one picture. I am jealous as I no longer have mine :-(

The gentleman behind the little boy in the second photo is under-dressed, even by today's standards.

You know they won't fight for control. Kid's having fun, yep. That's a nice way to start the day. Rope drop is, too.

Thanks, Major.

Yep, I think the Skyway was out of order. I see a chain crossing and what looks to be a cast member standing behind it.

What a view though! Dumbo with that Chalet in the background. I miss that!
There's something about a connection between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland... fantasy and imagination is how tomorrow is created. We need a new link in the parks between the two!

Thanks for continuing to post these and to all who send in photos!

Charming shots from my era. Being July, it would be unusual for the Skyway not to be working. No scheduled rehabs during that period. Besides a "101" another possibility are, or the prediction of, high winds that day. KS

Digging the mile-high hairdo on the lady under the Dumbo exit sign.

1st pic:

I see someone wearing lederhosen in the back, by the stairs to the chalet . . . I wonder what he/she is doing (if the ride is down) ??

This is a good picture with a nice background - with the chalet, trees and rocks. Too bad the cute little boy isn't smiling. It seems a little eerie to see him staring into the camera with a blank look.

That gal in the Dumbo, behind the 3 kids, is carrying one of those macrame purses with the hoop handles - which was very popular back then. I had one that was similar, back then.

I was in Disneyland that month . . . thanks, Major, for posting these!

I just realized the little boy may have that blank look from seeing those creepy big-headed America on Parade people. I probably looked just like that while watching that parade, that month. My apologies to those of you who loved that parade - please don't take it personally.
