Frontierland, July 1966

Today's Frontierland photos are not the best things ever - but they aren't the worst, either!

Let's take a look up the Rivers of America. The Mark Twain has just passed Fowler's Harbor, with Castle Rock to the right (on Tom Sawyer Island). The top deck is super crowded! July, what are you gonna do. Even the raft to Tom's island is about as full as it can be; it must have just touched land, everyone is facing in that direction.

It almost seems hard to believe that Disneyland actually had a "dead settler" prominently displayed near the burning cabin; I can't imagine that they would have such a thing today. All the mommies and daddies would complain, I suppose. With all of the changes to the island during the Star Wars Land construction, there was a part of me that hoped that a version of this burning cabin might return. How hard would it be to cook up (bad pun) a story that isn't offensive to most people? Alas, it didn't happen.

Oh, Major-

That 'settler' isn't dead - he's merely taking advantage of the first cloud-free day in over a week to "catch some rays". The reason he's fully-clothed is, just having heard the latest news regarding skin cancer... well, a fella can't be too careful.

Thanks, Major.

I think mid-60's Frontierland was the best. The trees are just the right height and size not to dwarf the Mark Twain and there were still some "hard facts" that created America sprinkled about. Nice set today as usual. Thanks, Major.

The "dead" settler was a recent Norwegian immigrant, just pining for the fjords! I'm sure there'll be a dead Stormtrooper to take his place soon.

It's hard to tell with the zoom-in blur, but I'll swear on my Great-Aunt Maud I see at least one babushka on that raft.

Nanook, I do think the settler is catching some rays, but he keeps his clothes on because he has put on some weight and is a little bit embarrassed.

K. Martinez, I still have a soft spot in my heart for the earliest days of Frontierland, but have to admit that the 60’s were probably the best.

Melissa, maybe that babushka is being worn by... your Great-Aunt Maud!

Poor old Zeke, he should have bought a Van Huesen shirt instead.
