Kids in Disneyland, August 1966

Here are some cute kids who have found a pup; they want to take him home. Can they, mom, can they, can they? They will feed him and walk him and train him every day, they promise. The pup looks like he thinks it's a pretty sweet idea! Meanwhile, watch out for that little boy in the shorts. He is an interloper and a communist.

The kids managed to ditch the commie, and now they are enjoying some futuristic furniture out behind the Monsanto House of the Future. Mom and one boy sit on what resemble headless giraffes; little bro and little sis are on what look like amorphous Henry Moore sculptures. Comfort shmumfort, they are cool and that's what matters.

"He is an interloper and a communist." Most definitely! lol

  2. Isn't it great that we eventually get to grow up and not look 'goofy' all of our lives-? This is spite of the fact our Mother's constantly declared how "cute we looked 'at that age' ".

It also appears the first shot is taken beside the fence surrounding the Midget Autopia. But on April 3rd, 1966, it was closed to make way for the It's a Small World attraction. Wonder if only the fence remained...

  3. Cute kids. Would not have wanted to foot the dental bill for the braces they were going to need. Ouch!

Speaking of interlopers, what's with the amature Sam Peckinpah on the right in the second photo?

  4. My avatar picture was taken near where the first one was taken, but in 2005; they had the same trees I see. Love the picture spot that second one was taken in - have never seen that part of the HOF attraction.

  5. Whoa, I remember those "giraffe-y" things. What weird scrap of neuron still remains to hold that memory?

    Thanks Major.

@Tom, what a cool story. I love seeing pictures of my avatar background, right under the split of the peoplemover in front of the 1967 Tomorrowland.

  6. While I remember the House of the Future pretty well, those "giraffe-y" things escape me completely. I don't recall seeing those at all. Very cool!

  7. Anon, that kid is trying way too yard to look like a typical American. Just out of frame we can't see where he messed up… he is wearing Russian army boots.

Nanook, I can only hope I don't still look goofy… maybe that is wishful thinking. As for the Midget Autopia, I somehow thought it was more to the east of Storybook Land; but I'm not sure enough to bet any money on it!

Alonozo, ouch in more ways than one: expensive, and (as a wearer of braces and a retainer when I was a kid) actually kind of painful.

Tom, very cool that your avatar photo was taken in nearly the same spot.

JG, I have no personal memories of the House of the Future, though my older brother claims he remembers it himself.

    K. Martinez, I almost think I've seen similar outdoor seating that looked like that, only not at Disneyland. Wish I could remember where...

  8. Bonus points for mentioning Henry Moore.

  9. Major-

The Midget Autopia sat in close proximity to Storybook Land. It's the Junior Autopia that resided to the east.

The Junior Autopia closed in 1958, only to re-open in 1959 as the (now expanded) Fantasyland Autopia

  10. Those Giraffe-y things were part of a set of "Modernistic" playground equipment / sculpture that was popular at the time. The shapes were typical of the 50's: either mathematically inspired (parabolic hyperboloid) or greatly abstracted natural shapes (our giraffes are probably horses). I'll have a look on the web and see if there are other images. Most of this stuff was pulled out when it became passe in the 70's or a legal liability in the 80's. Cast concrete playground equipment is hard to defend.

BTW, Howdy Nanook: We know each other through the http://automaticwasher.org/ website.

  11. You know that kid must have been a spy because of the vaguely sinister photographer lurking in the background of each picture.
